Hi everyone,

I know no one knows but how long do you think India will be on the red list for?
South Africa has been on since end of December but now with the vaccine uptake being good I'm assuming it won't be as long as South Africa. I was thinking more like October November?
My bf has someone who wants to come
Over to the uk from India for a specific reason so we were just discussing this.

Any input would be greatly appreciated .
Thanks

I honestly don’t think anyone on here can tell you. It sounds like India are a long way away from being ok as, whilst they have vaccinated more people than any other country, they still have a long way to go.

Coupled with concern over here about the Indian variant - I can imagine it will be many many months if even this year.

friesandchais · 19/05/2021 23:26

@Confusedaboutlots I know now one can say exactly but I just see baby an opinion. But it's more ppl being vaccinated here so you think that'll Speed up them doing odd red list

Sciurus83 · 19/05/2021 23:32

I wouldn't even be considering it for 6 months, beyond that who knows

omgthepain · 19/05/2021 23:46

That's like
How long is a piece of string???????

It's very hard to know isn't it? India are in a terrible state I have Indian colleagues at work who've said the situation there is far worse than what we see on the news etc...

Hopefully as time goes on - things will improve

KenAdams · 20/05/2021 00:08

At the moment, longer than any other country will be. Their vaccine programme is shit and they're being economical with the truth regarding numbers. Leaders of other countries will exercise extreme caution making agreements with Modi as he isn't coming out of this well at all.

ohfourfoxache · 20/05/2021 00:36

Probably depends on when Boris has his next trip planned

araiwa · 20/05/2021 01:04

@ohfourfoxache

Probably depends on when Boris has his next trip planned
Or if Boris has any rich Indian friends being inconvenienced
QueenVikki · 20/05/2021 01:16

Who knows? Due to its massive population and poor health care structure/vaccine delivery I would guess between 6 - 18 months.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/05/2021 03:17

India is considered a primary or secomdary home to a lot of wealthy British residents / citizens & recruiting Indian people is vitally important to our economy. So it will be the bare minimum needed for the Indian or UK vaccination programme to take effect. In hot countries their summer season is often worse for all kinds of respiratory illnesses, so I’m guessing we’ll see major improvements in India from Oct-Nov. If by then the UK population is mostly vaccinated then borders will open again

bp300 · 20/05/2021 07:26

There are flights coming in from Mumbai Daily but there will be hotel quarantine for a long time.

loginfail · 20/05/2021 07:34

@bp300

There are flights coming in from Mumbai Daily but there will be hotel quarantine for a long time.
True, plus a few other Indian cities but generally on a more irregular basis than before they went onto the red list.....

Ultimately if somebody has to travel India -> UK and has the resources they still have the option of flying in and then entering managed (hotel) quarantine on arrival.

Plumbear2 · 20/05/2021 08:10

I don't know. Judging by how bad things are in India I'm hoping at least not before the end of the year.

RightYesButNo · 20/05/2021 17:11

I think there is no chance for October or November, @friesandchais. I don’t think it really compares to South Africa. I assume since you know people in India, you’re reading the news about the situation there, but it’s almost impossible to fathom. They’ve had well over 300,000 new infections PER DAY for several days in the last month. So many people are dying that they’ve suspended the Hindu tradition of not burying people after sunset and they are now cremating and burying people 24 hours a day. They say it’s even worse in rural areas where they can’t afford wood, so the River Ganges is “filled with bodies,” which is leading experts to say that the country’s death toll may be five or even ten times higher than officially reported due to lack of reporting from the poorest areas. And even the cities are a disaster as far as deaths go; someone is dying of COVID every four minutes in New Delhi. And more importantly, there was a flight from India where everyone tested negative before the flight, and then over 50 people tested positive while in quarantine after the flight (and some reported others were sick and coughing on the flight). That will definitely be held up as an example before travel is approved again.

Apologies for the link from the Sun but it includes news about that flight and the best photos I’ve found of the situation:
www.thesun.co.uk/news/14770291/passengers-flight-delhi-hong-kong-all-test-positive-covid/

And here’s the article on the Ganges and the rural areas, which is heartbreaking:
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/20/stench-death-pervades-rural-india-ganges-swells-covid-victims

So no, I cannot imagine there being unrestricted flights by October. I would say minimum a year from now.

friesandchais · 20/05/2021 17:15

@RightYesButNo thank you for the links I'll have a read, I presume your right.

No countries have been taken off the red list so I'm guessing a long long time

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 20/05/2021 22:02

Red lists are designated as such for a reason. Why would anyone want to risk their own and all contacts lives (and livelihoods) to such evolving killer variants? Perhaps to get the messaging across clearer and save lives - there needs to be a blacklist? Australia (yet again) seems to be taking this more seriously by pragmatically following the science and not pandering to particular demographics.

friesandchais · 20/05/2021 23:40

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia I completely agree with you, i definitely do not want India or any other country off the red list for a long time. I've said all along bloating all borders is the beat way to stop this. This country definitely needs to learn from
Australia and New Zealand .

StoneofDestiny · 21/05/2021 00:25

On the news tonight they said it will take years to vaccinate the population of India.
Looking at India's records of the sick and dead, they have no clue whether half the population is still alive - bodies are being lobbed into fires or put in the Ganges having never been diagnosed or registered dead. It's chaos.
None of their figures are reliable.
Scary that India has nuclear weapons when they are in such a chaotic state over basics like health and welfare, births and deaths and hygiene.

Ridiculous we allowed flights in and out of India when the Covid chaos was clearly evident over there.
