rush hour driving test in city.

DS has his driving test at 08:00am in Oxford.

I can't decide whether that's good because the traffic will be slow moving on the ring road/headington, or bad because the traffic is mad when it does move.

Anyone had a rush hour test? How did it go?

Good, he won't be able to travel far. Just needs to make sure he's in the correct lanes etc. Oxford isn't too bad to drive around. I hope it goes well.

I have - was dreading it but it was good. Much easier to pull out etc. as traffic moving slower and you don’t have to go as far. I passed Smile

My ds recently had his test at 8am. Admittedly not a busy city but still pretty chocka. I reckon it's an advantage as less road travellable! They did an alternative route because of it. He passed 😉

My instructor specifically told me which tests to go for... busy, because the instructor will take you on a shorter route. I had so many red lights on my test... each one a blessing!

Yeah I'd see it as a good thing - let the time tick away sitting in traffic! Just needs to make sure he can hold his nerve and not let them affect his hold on the clutch.

Terrible. It was 8.30 in East London.
School run traffic and associated behaviours.. like cars parked in the middle of the road.

I didn't pass.

Yes mine was in evening rush hour and in a city I was unfamiliar with (I went away and did a three day intensive course). Worked well, can’t go too far.

Blossomtoes · 19/05/2021 22:17

Mine was a rush hour test - 8.30am in Reading. It was fine, the traffic barely moved!

Sparklesocks · 19/05/2021 22:19

I know someone who did theirs in a busy town during morning rush hour and she said it was great, they were stuck in traffic for most of it and pulled into a side road to do the manoeuvres/pulling away. Said it settled her nerves because she had lots of time to think about everything she was doing and approach turns etc.
Best of luck to him!

Make sure he's mega aware of cyclists but I'm sure it'll be fine. Personally I took mine at 4pm on a Saturday in a small market town

1805 · 19/05/2021 22:26

Ah yes, I suppose he can't go as far. I'm imagining mad school run traffic and loads of stupidly parked cars.

If he's insured on your car, can you take him at that time on the routes for practice? Otherwise, just as a passenger.

Slippy78 · 19/05/2021 23:05

Wouldn't have mattered at all for my first 4 tests. At the time the examiners in Leeds didn't have enough work so were only passing around 2% of people so they could get the repeat tests. I eventually got a last minute cancellation in Whitby and passed with zero faults.

ME.

I had a rush hour test, 2 weeks before Christmas, and in the middle of a big town - think similar to Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Coventry size, full of traffic controlled traffic islands, traffic lights, (and a different one for each lane,) and carriageways changing from one car to 2 cars wide, and then back to one.

It also had a one way system, And it was on roads that were a mixture of icy, and gritted, and slushy. It had put down 3-4" of snow the night before, and 10 minutes into my driving test, a fog began to form!

No problems at all! I had more time to think, and was able to relax a bit more, because everything was so slow moving. Massive advantage for me. Smile

Good luck to your son @1805 Grin

Oh, and I passed my driving test by the way! Grin
