Babysitting charges/out of hours childcare

Hello, just interested in how much others pay for baby sitters? I’m an nhs shift worker and constantly struggle with childcare (single parent). Currently looking for babysitters who can look after my 6 year old some evenings for a few hours until I get home from work. Just wondered what others pay for out of hours childcare? For context I live in london.

For babysitting, so kids basically in bed and asleep then £9 per hour

normally its more before 7pm in recognition that the kids will be awake. So £11/12 per hour

I pay £10 per hour plus a tip. For London I would say £12 per hour so if two hours I would give £30 including the tip.

I know it’s different cos there is actual looking after of the children but I think it’s absolutely shocking to pay someone a tenner an hour to sit in your living room watching films while the kid is asleep upstairs. When I was a teenager I’d babysit for a fiver for the night fgs.

Ten an hour here. Meet them off the bus, give them a snack. They don't really need much looking after just an occasional referee according to the babysitter. She can bring her own child (same age as mine) along though which I think makes it more appealing.

Thank you. Yes so hours around 5.30-8.30. Includes giving him dinner (beige freezer food 🙄) telling him to get into the bath abs just reading him a story. One person wanted £15 p/hr, considerably more than I get paid 🤦🏼‍♀️

You mean an after school nanny? Babysitting is generally when child is already in bed. After school care is a nanny.

I wonder if you are finding cost is higher due to the time of day. 5:30pm is not really evening babysitting time, I would say that is around 7pm. So you are more in after-school nanny time.

I have recently changed pricing I do to £14 per hour regardless of the time of day but I generally care for babies who sleep when they feel like it.

Who would a 5:30pm time appeal to, maybe a college student as I recall my college days used to finish around 5pm, though it did vary.

Dishwashersaurous · 19/05/2021 21:33

Problem is that isn't really babysitting for the first part. And lots of people who do babysitting have full time jobs, so can't get somewhere for 5.30.

Maybe ask if a TA at school would do it?

I babysat through my teens and I just charged a flat hourly rate regardless of whether the children were in bed or not. It was not the same as nannying as I was not expected to plan activities, keep an overall eye on the child's progress et al. Feeding a child snacks and putting them to bed is babysitting.
