To be surprised by the number of holidays?

I have been really surprised by the number of holidays some people on MN go on. I would not have the money or the annual leave to go on that many.
Last Summer people were commenting saying how since the first lockdown in March, they had already had to cancel three holidays. Various people talking about how they normally go on five or six holidays a year and are really missing them.
I must mix in different circles as I did not realise any except the super-rich went on this many holidays.

I sure do appreciate how lucky I am financially. When I was a lone parent/university student living in a shite hole I could never, ever have dreamed of my life now.

khawk89 · 19/05/2021 22:53

Not normal for me. We go on one holiday within the UK for one week Saturday to Saturday at the cost of about £500-600 to stay each year. Very occasionally we'd squeeze in a weekend at Haven in spring late notice as they go for as cheap as £75 for 3 nights if you're lucky.

Glitterblue · 19/05/2021 22:55

Sometimes we have 3 - 2 cheap UK caravan holidays and then a week self catering with my parents where we split the cost. Other years we might have one week in a caravan and 2 long weekends. We haven't been abroad since 2007!

I still don't know what a juicing retreat is
CeibaTree · 19/05/2021 22:57

We aren't particularly well off, but in normal times we go on a few holidays per year - camping with friends, a UK based holiday with the in-laws, visiting overseas friends, long weekends away with other friends. We both get roughly 30 days leave plus bank holidays etc

Mygardenisanightmare · 19/05/2021 22:58

wtaf is a juicing retreat?

This with bells on, knobber

SwimBaby · 19/05/2021 22:59

FunnysInLaJardin google Jason Vale’s juicing retreat.

This thread is hilarious. How the other half live eh?

LemonSherbetFancies · 19/05/2021 23:01

We go away every couple of months as a couple, sometimes more.
Both in our fifties and DP earns very well and can work flexibly.

Passionfruitpizza · 19/05/2021 23:04

We only go on holiday to the in-laws for a week a year, been a good 5 years since we had any other kind of holiday.

It's not about finance is it, it's just different priorities.
Igletpiglet · 19/05/2021 23:19

define holiday. for me a holiday is longer than a weekend.

brondary · 19/05/2021 23:24

@freakyfridays you mean feed your kids or go away?

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/05/2021 23:24

@pinkmagnolias there are 9 of us, so per person our holidays are roughly the same price as yours.

coogee · 19/05/2021 23:26

If you include what I would term 'breaks'. Three or four days away. We must take ten or twelve a year. Sometimes we are away for a month.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/05/2021 23:30

@FunnysInLaJardin I mean DH and I earn around £120k pa and there is no way we could afford that. How much do you people earn? around the same , the difference I am guessing is we leave in a cheap area of the country. Our mortgage is only £280 a month for our six bed house.

Wotsitsarecheesy · 19/05/2021 23:35

Blimey you lot are making me miserable! As a family of 5 on a very average income (we get tax credits) we have always tried to have 1 week away in the uk each year. There is no spare money for other holidays. But we didn't get one last year because of covid, and it looks like we won't be getting one this year either as didn't want to risk booking one before we were allowed to travel, and now everything seems extortionate prices. We have never been abroad as a family, and as our eldest is now at uni, I don't think we ever will. All this talk of multiple holidays and breaks, it really is how the other half live! But fwiw, I have always thoroughly enjoyed our UK weeks away - and I didn't think I had missed out on anything at all till i just read this thread Grin

Mygardenisanightmare · 19/05/2021 23:37

Wotsitsarecheesy

Honestly, don't be disheartened, it's probably representative of about 0.000005% of RL folk go on all these holidays. I live in an affluent area and no one goes away like the posters on here seem to, it's a handful out of millions.

pinkmagnolias · 19/05/2021 23:42

MyDcAreMarvel there are 9 of us

Do you have seven children altogether?

Or are you counting inlaws/relatives/a sibling and their family who pay for themselves and chip in to split costs?

brondary · 19/05/2021 23:43

How much deposit did you pay that your mortgage is so low? I live in a cheap part of the country and could not buy a 6 bedroom place for that monthly amount.

What does that even mean? Where do you think posters come from? Venus? Confused

You just have to look at the various travel figures on a normal years, clearly someone is going on holiday.

Pinetreesfall · 19/05/2021 23:54

Hahaha and here's me stressing about my £500 balance due on my holiday.
£20k a year on holidays?! That's nearly as much as I earn Shock

brondary · 19/05/2021 23:55

@freakyfridays I have looked at the figures. A small number of people go a lot of holidays.
And what I mean si look at any similar thread on MN e.g. how much do you earn. You would think wages are very high in Britain instead of low.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/05/2021 23:56

@pinkmagnolias Do you have seven children altogether? yes , well eight but one is a baby so no added holidays costs atm.
