To expect a partial or full refund

We have saved for 3 years to be able to get a built in wardrobe and shelves in our bedroom. We previously had no storage so this was a big deal and we used a well known company with a decent reputation.

We had the design visit followed by a surveyor visit to check the designers work and see if there will be any issues. All fine.

It comes to installation day and the designer has mismeasured (sp?) where the plug points are in the room (one single socket, one double) so now all but one socket are unusable and that's only usable because they will have to drill a big hole in the side of our new wardrobe to fit a plug/extension lead through.

They also had to pull the whole thing away from the wall in order to make the units fit properly due to the wrong measurements being taken. This has reduced the space we thought we would have at the other end of the room.

In total we have spent £3,500 and I'm really unhappy that we have not received what we thought we were getting. It looks ok but that's only because the fitter felt so bad he has stayed longer to try and make the best of it.

Would you expect a refund? If so how much?
AIBU to think this is not ok and the surveyor should have picked all this up to avoid exactly these problems?

@Singalongasong

Also, I would focus on getting them to correct it rather than give you money back. Not only will it let you enjoy your wardrobes more, but they will be working with cost prices so it may well be easier for them to agree to.
Agree with this

I would send them photos and explain and say you want it redone with correct measurements as that is what you paid for.

Thanks all, I'm normally pretty hot on these things but we specifically used this service as they design and install and I'm neither a
Designer nor am I a surveyor.

When it was designed the plug sockets in the plan fitted nicely in the cupboard with no cuts in the base boards or sides but because they got where the sockets are incorrect it buggered the installation and the guy just tried to make it fit - in the evening I noticed that there was not enough space to push a plug in so I have base boards with chunks cut out but not enough to allow space for a plug to be pushed in.

I guess it's lesson learned but why should I have to take it upon myself to check a professional surveyors drawings when I've no experience?

I've made a complaint and it is being dealt with I just wanted to gauge what the response might be. If it makes a difference the customer service office I spoke to earlier has now agreed that the surveyor is at fault so that's something

I would ask them to remove and start again not bodge the current one.

Singalongasong · 20/05/2021 08:48

Agreed @mum198000, I meant replace rather than continue to bodge.

OP it's difficult to know without a diagram, but it sounds like the cupboards would need to be redesigned to accommodate the actual current socket locations. It might suit both parties for the company to arrange an electrician to move the sockets. Then they'd just need to replace any hacked or missized bits, and you would get the cupboard as you originally designed it, uncompromised by where the sockets actually are now. You could push for a redesign around existing sockets, but it'll be a harder fight, and would it actually result in a better cupboard?
