Vaccines not used so destroyed

So Malawi has today burned thousands of unused vaccines. Meanwhile countries are urged to consider poorer countries and send vaccines to them.

I think vaccines should be sent to countries that need them (India) and will actually use them and not to countries like Malawi where they end up wasted.

@Ponoka7

"Do they have similar problems with other vaccines or just with covid vaccines?"

It's the short shelf life and storage that's the problem. When Elboa first hit, they had issues. Then planned well over a couple of years. Our infectious disease specialists went out and hrlped. When Elboa reached Nigeria (I'm using Nigeria because it's somewhere I know about), it was a collaboration to eradicate it. The shit has hit the fan with Covid and there's no-one to help each country because it's global. African countries are dealing with other health crises at the same time. Plus there's still terrorism and high crime rates etc.

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated.

It says in the report that they're sending what they can to Ghana. Ghana is more developed and has better infrastructure. So that will reduce waste. It was hoped that this crisis would see an improvement in places like Nigeria because leaders couldn't go to other countries for healthcare, so would look at making theirs better.

Perhaps take it up with the BBC about why they are publishing the story today? I don't write the news, I merely read it and then had an opinion as people sometime do

No, you selectively quoted a more nuanced story. You conveniently left out the very prominent word “expired” until you were directly challenged on the point. That’s very goady.

Groan.

Not true but you are obviously spoiling for an argument so I will let it go. We don't all have an agenda, so of us see a story and wonder why is is so.

Other posters have highlighted some of the problems. Maybe the BBC news story will mean that these issues will be investigated so vaccines don't go to waste or the roll out is set up beforehand so waste is minimised. Perhaps a newer vaccine with a longer shelf life/easier to transport might be the solution for some countries?
