To be gutted my thyroid test appears to be normal? ( slightly light hearted)

So i got a thyroid test to do at home and it is normal. So now I have to accept that I am knackered and find it hard to loose weight due to lifestyle and age( i'm 43).
Why am I so bloody knackered all the time then?!

Get Vitamin b12, Folate, vitamin d, iron, and ferratin checked

Dishwashersaurous · 19/05/2021 12:12

Because you are 43.

But seriously if think objectively about your life do you do all the thing that one is supposed to do. Drink two litres of water, exercise five times a week, do mindfulness before bed every night, eat five fresh fruit and veg a day, sleep eight hours, not get stressed, very moderate caffeine, regular breaks away from responsibilities to recharge etc.

Or like most people do you do your best balancing work and home responsibilities.

And as we encourage forties the body simply cannot absorb a beating in the same way it does in twenties and thirties.

HumphreyCobblers · 19/05/2021 12:13

Or you could be in peri menopause

Fingersstuckwithsuperglue · 19/05/2021 12:16

Any other symptoms op? I’m thinking peri too perhaps.

whosappleman · 19/05/2021 12:24

I'm with you. I held on to a potential thyroid issue being the reason for being tired and fat for quite a long time. Turns out I just eat too much crap, don't exercise and am old

Crappyfridays7 · 19/05/2021 12:24

I’m 42 and have no thyroid and on thyroxine and exactly the same, treatment doesn’t necessarily make it better sadly. I still feel like I’ve been run over by a bus most days, my hair and skin are rubbish & I’m overweight and shifting it isn’t easy I do low sugar/carb high protein which seems to work as long as I’m active. It’s really hard to exercise 5 times a week when you’re exhausted - I do 12 hour shifts and sometimes after a couple of shifts I’m just done in I need to rest my body.

I would get further bloods done op, hope you’re feeling better soon

Curiosity101 · 19/05/2021 12:27

@malificent7 What test did you do? Did you do full thyroid function including antibodies or just TSH, Free T3 and Free T4?

malificent7 · 19/05/2021 12:32

Not a full thyroid but i might.

@Crappyfridays7
Snap snap

Same here. No thyroid at all after emergency surgery thanks to graves disease Sad

It's the Graves' disease even if thyroid levels are balanced.

I've gained over two stone in the last two years am constantly knackered and I take every multi vitamin vit d b calcium and magnesium as extras every day Aswell.

It's absolutely shit.
I'm 41 and feel 81 some days.

3scape · 19/05/2021 12:34

I was recently tested for a range of things they all came back normal. So wtf is up with me?! I hear you op

Oneweekleft · 19/05/2021 12:43

Maybe your diet isnt great. Ive started on the cambridge diet to loose weight and immediately i feel more energetic despite being a bit hungry! I think its cutting out all the carbs and excess calories. Take a good look at your lifestyle and you might find the answers. Are you drinking in the evenings? Going to bed late? Snacking on junk? Any of these things could effect your energy. Also being around draining people or spending too much time on social media.

Curiosity101 · 19/05/2021 12:44

@malificent7 I only ask because I got my thyroid checked privately recently. I opted for the full thyroid check, TSH did come back high (which doesn't sound the same as your case) but T3 and T4 were both 'normal'. Fortunately, as I'd gone for the full check it also included antibodies and effectively showed I have early-stage Hashimotos.

I took my results to the GP where they did a repeat and confirmed it. Despite my T3 and T4 being 'normal', they obviously weren't normal for me otherwise my TSH wouldn't have been high.

Also, the reason I decided to check my thyroid was that I was always cold and my cycles were quite long (I ovulated late at CD21/22 with quite a short luteal phase). I've noticed since starting Thyroxine I definitely feel a bit better in myself and my cycles instantly starting regulating down to roughly 29 days with ovulation around CD15 and a 14-day luteal phase. So despite my actual T3/T4 technically being 'normal' it does seem it was having an effect.

Neonprint · 19/05/2021 12:45

It could be loads of other stuff. I have an underactive thyroid and other health issues. You should see your GP.

Neonprint · 19/05/2021 12:46

Also what were your results? (numerical) just you can feel crap before you are out of the normal zone.

Sushirolls · 19/05/2021 12:48

You need to be optimal, to be well. Sadly most drs say you're fine if you're within their range, when in reality, you're not.

Gemma2019 · 19/05/2021 13:55

Ah I know - I was convinced my thyroid test would be abnormal so was shocked when it wasn't.

I've also been clinging to the notion that I'm "big boned" for the last few decades.

Neonprint · 19/05/2021 16:22

This in spades!

Im talking to my GP tomorrow. My tsh is getting on for 3 (range up to 4.5 or 5 is normal sometimes over 10 is what is needed dor diagnosis! ) but that's on levothyroxine. I'm knackered and feel this tsh level isn't helping. So I'll be asking to up my dose.

KeyboardWorriers · 19/05/2021 16:26

@Curiosity101 where /how did you arrange the private test?
I have so many symptoms - weight gain, cold intolerance, dry eyes, eyelid droop, losing eyelashes, dry skin etc but Dr said my test was "within range"

Neonprint · 19/05/2021 16:33

You really need to ask for print outs of your results. As within range doesn't always mean you are feeling ok. Also they don't always test for everything re thyroid.

KeyboardWorriers · 19/05/2021 16:34

Ok thanks Neon I will do that

QueenPaw · 19/05/2021 17:47

Mine was within range apparently
TSH 7.5. I have hashimotos and am on levo now

DeclineandFall · 19/05/2021 17:51

I would get it tested properly by an expert if you can. Friend has life long health issues now because she was left undiagnosed for so long. Just because your level is within range- it might not be optimum for you.
Same with iron levels- you need to find the right level for you.

Gothichouse40 · 19/05/2021 17:55

Thyroid UK has a lot of useful information on their website. I hate to break it to folk, but if you have Hashimotos you are better with a gluten-free diet. Pain as that is.

Curiosity101 · 19/05/2021 18:36

@KeyboardWorriers I did this test www.letsgetchecked.com/gb/en/home-thyroid-antibody-test/

I then took the results to my GP and asked for them to be repeated so I could start treatment.

@Gothichouse40 Whilst I agree there's plenty of research showing a link between a gluten-free diet and improvements in Hashimoto's symptoms for some people... I think it's a bit of a stretch to say if you've got Hashimoto's you will be better with a gluten free diet. It does still depend on whether you have a gluten intolerance, which isn't true for all people with Hashimoto's.

MummyLikesPizza · 19/05/2021 18:43

It could still be thyroid. I had a private thyroid antibody test done and it came back with Hashimoto's. So basically my thyroid is getting attacked and it will stop functioning soon and it will become under active.

This test won't be give to you by GP if your thyroid is working fine, which is a bit silly Hmm

Might be worth looking into if your iron levels come back fine?
