Are you suffering from anxiety?

Crispychillibeef · 18/05/2021 12:50

I do wonder how someone who has asked such a ridiculous question has the capacity to operate a washing machine in the first place.

freakyfridays · 18/05/2021 12:54

Oh I have read much worst on here, usually followed by hilarious answers completely missing the point. You can't beat superior answers when they are completely stupid. Grin

This thread is disappointing so far!

AlCalavicci · 18/05/2021 14:02

Hopfuly ok is having a nice coffee / glass of wine and the washer has been good and completed it's job with no fuss Grin

PrincessPeachh · 18/05/2021 14:38

Some of you are nuts! I never leave the house with the washing machine on! Such a fire risk. Probably the same people replying to yesterday’s thread about leaving bedroom doors open at night!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/05/2021 14:51

And how often has your washing machine burst into flames whilst you were in the house?

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 18/05/2021 16:02

To be fair, given the Hotpoint (and similar brands made in same factories) machine problems not all that long ago - it is a valid concern and could happen. (Then tbf any electrical item could do it, not just washers)

Needsleep32 · 18/05/2021 16:06

I put the washing machine on before leaving for work sometimes... Confused

Would never leave dryer on, but I didn’t think washing machine was as much of a risk.

BetterThanKleenex · 18/05/2021 16:24

Oh I wouldn't leave the washing alone, it might get darked on.

lazyarse123 · 18/05/2021 16:32

My neighbours house burnt out and it was the washer that had been left on overnight , everyone got out luckily. The fire brigade came round to everybody and told us that washing machines failing to switch off are a major cause of house fires. I used to put mine on as I left for work don't do it anymore.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 18/05/2021 16:35

The fire brigade had a campaign a few years ago saying you should never leave a washing machine running qithout someone being in the house.

FlibbertyGiblets · 18/05/2021 16:37

Was that not tumble dryers?

For 11 minutes?
sillysmiles · 18/05/2021 17:16

@princesspeachh... you'd hate our house, dishwasher and washing machine while we are at work or on bed.
All doors open at night so dog can go to the kitchen for a drink during the night.

PrincessPeachh · 18/05/2021 17:22

I bet you all leave your devices on charge overnight too!!

I genuinely would be worried leaving my washing machine on whilst I’m out though. Thankfully it’s never burst into flames when I’ve been at home, but that doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen.

Better check your house insurance. You're not supposed to leave washing machines unattended.

People are really complacent about electricals. Boggles my head a bit Hmm

newnortherner111 · 18/05/2021 17:27

So what did you do OP?

sillysmiles · 18/05/2021 17:58

@PrincessPeachh
Yup!

lazyarse123 · 18/05/2021 18:07

SGS1805. The point the fire brigade made to us was that sometimes washers don't switch off so they carry on spinning and the motor catches fire.
That's why they recommend not leaving them unattended.

FaceForRadio1973 · 19/05/2021 08:10

Just as an aside, about 8 years ago, I was doing an outside broadcast for the local fire-station open day. Whilst chatting to one of the fire-fighters, I mentioned that I'd put the washing on and gone out... He then gave me a hell of a bollocking, telling me about the danger. He fetched some photographs of fires started by washing machines.

I'm ultra aware now about leaving it unattended....

I wouldn't leave the washing machine on in an empty house but rather than ask on here OP just give your friend a call to say you're running late and apologise!

Onairjunkie · 19/05/2021 08:19

Some of you must be exhausted, worrying about stuff like this. Confused

Has anyone ever heard of a washing machine bursting into flames?

Why is the fridge so trustworthy?

AlCalavicci · 19/05/2021 13:28

@Onairjunkie
My fridge is not trustworthy at all it eats all the chocolate and drinks all the cider , it's a thief I tell ya ! Grin

Yes we have which is why we are saying turn it off when you go out.

Many times. Full watchdog etc programmes about it too.

Just google it. There's thousands of machines from Hotpoint/Whirlpool and others being recalled since 2014 to even now. Manufacturers are telling people to not use it or - if they must - to stick to 20 degrees and under due to the heating elements inside not being able to reliably handle higher temps or the doors.

It's at least 66 different model numbers affected and they're replacing them with similar spec machines as soon as they can get around to it according to Whirlpool.

Whirlpool CEO: "If you do continue to use your appliance, you should only use cold water cycles of 20 degrees celsius or lower. This is because the issue is associated with the washing machine's heating element being activated during washing cycles above 20 degrees.”
