As in, "she was being downright rude" NOT "she was being damn right rude".

I see this one all the time on Facebook groups at the moment and it's silently doing my head in. Why?!

Seen is the present perfect and goes with 'have', as in 'have you seen the new film that's just come out? My friend has seen it.'

Saw is the simple past and doesn't go with 'have' - as in 'I saw you going for a walk yesterday'.

@mainsfed

I don't really get annoyed at SPAG errors, but I was watching the World's Most Evil Killers and I was a bit annoyed at the errors in the serial killer's letters. Apoint etc
Yes , don't these serial killers want to make a good impression? The sloppy grammar and spelling doesn't look great.

It's not that difficult to ask or friend or neighbour to check your threatening letter before posting it anonymously to the police.

Sometimes I would say damn right though in certain situations, or sometimes I use the saying damn straight which is very American.

There's nothing wrong with damn right unless it is being used in place of downright.

I don't know what is hard to understand about this.

I agree that many of these are down to people not reading so much. My personal bugbear is the inability to construct a subordinate clause, resulting in sentences like "I had a meeting with HR, which it was very upsetting". The point of a subordinate clause is that you just need one sentence and it links two connected thoughts. Drives me mad.

'hopefully' is am interesting onethat has morphed in my lifetime, from meaning 'with a soul full of hope' to 'i hope that'

Darkmood · 19/05/2021 07:00

Do the accents not come up when you press and hold the letter?
