To think dark brown eyes aren’t common in white British people

Ds1 has dark brown eyes and due to his skin tone people just assume he’s white British rather than having a Middle Eastern father. My other children have a darker skin tone so people believe them. Aibu to think most people with dark brown eyes are usually from minority ethics background.

My daughter is fair with dark brown eyes

WilsonMilson · 16/05/2021 14:11

Rubbish, loads of white/ British people have dark brown eyes.

DoingItMyself · 16/05/2021 14:13

My ex husband had dark brown eyes and hair, with very pale white skin. His father had dark brown eyes. His sister had dark brown eyes.

DoingItMyself · 16/05/2021 14:14

My next door neighbour's son had blond hair, fair skin and dark brown eyes. Stunning child.

Chienloup · 16/05/2021 14:25

I am white British with dark brown eyes, dark brown hair, and olive skin. My husband has dark brown eyes, light brown hair and very fair skin. Two of our children have dark brown eyes and light olive skin, with blonde hair. The other child has green eyes, pale skin, and light brown hair.
No one should assume anyone else's ethnicity - so I agree with you on that point.

The only two times in my life my colouring has been commented on was once when I went to Northern Ireland and my boyfriend at the time's mum and aunt made a big fuss about my brown eyes "Ohh, you've got the dark brown eyes, wow, no one here has brown eyes". What? No one? In Northern Ireland? Grin

The other time was super weird - I went for a job interview and when the Deputy Head collected me at reception, one of the first things she said was: "Where are you from, you're not English are you?" When I said I was she was very confused - "Oh, you don't look it"!

@amusedtodeath1

I just had my DD who's doing Biology A-level explain how it works

For example I have hazel eyes and her Dad has blue. I had assumed that she would have hazel because blue is not a dominant colour, but she explained that the genes come in pairs, so in me because my Dad had blue eyes I carry the blue gene even though the Hazel colour dominates it. Therefore my child had inherited a blue gene from me and her Dad's blue gene, giving her blue eyes, if she had inherited my hazel gene it would dominant her Dad's blue and she would have had hazel

But children with the same parents often have different eye colours to one another, so this isn't strictly true.

No, I’ve got very dark brown eyes but pale white skin and have no ethnic minority ancestry (as far back as I know). I don’t think that’s unusual at all.

MissScotland101 · 16/05/2021 14:36

I am Scottish and have dark brown eyes, as does my mother, when I have a tan though then lots of people think I’m Spanish, and it’s definitely the eyes that do it with the tan. We are all Scottish & English in my family.

A woman once said to me that ‘most Scottish’ folks have blue eyes but obviously that’s rubbish.

Many Brits have brown/dark brown eyes, but I would agree that blue eyes are more common in British folks.

Bul21ia · 16/05/2021 14:39

I agree OP I usually wonder if I see a white person with dark brown eyes if they have something in them.

Lou7171 · 16/05/2021 14:41

Yes blue eyes are the most common colour in the UK, not brown

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2021 14:42

YABU

I thought DS had my eyes, which I thought I'd inherited from the Asian side of my family, until we went to a wedding on DHs side of the family and every single family member I met had massive brown eyes just liked DS.I didn't expect the brown eyes to have come from that side of the family.

CorvusPurpureus · 16/05/2021 14:43

One of my dc has dark, dark eyes with milky skin & auburn hair. I'm not aware of anyone of colour on either side of the family - we are definitely boringly white. It rather suits dc - she looks like a teenage Elizabeth I Grin.

OTOH I live in the ME, & blue eyed people are not uncommon - I always think it's a particularly eye catching & rather gorgeous combination when I see it with darker skin & hair. One of my colleagues has deep olive skin, jet black hair & bluey green eyes the colour of the ocean. He's a very ordinary looking chap apart from his colouring, but those eyes...wow. Absolutely stunning.

accentdusoleil · 16/05/2021 14:44

And not all Middle Eastern people have brown eyes and dark skin. People from the Levant countries are a lot more varied than in skin tone than you may think if you are not from the region

StevieNix · 16/05/2021 14:45

Yabu, we are white British. my mum has dark brown eyes, my eyes are so dark they’re almost black and so is my sons.

Porkee · 16/05/2021 14:47

No don't think it's uncommon at all. I am white British with very dark brown eyes. Never thought it uncommon.

gollymissdolly · 16/05/2021 15:04

Definitely not uncommon.I have hazel eyes and light brown hair,DC1 has dark brown eyes and brown hair,DC2 has dark brown eyes and blonde hair.DH has blue eyes and brown hair. Our heritage is Scottish.

Ariela · 16/05/2021 15:32

My eldest was, like me, and my mother, born with dark brown eyes. She has the fairest skin and masses of freckles just as you'd expect with a red head - but she has brown hair.

Blueberrycreampie · 16/05/2021 16:07

My father had dark brown eyes, my Irish heritage mother mid grey. I have dark brown eyes and had very dark hair. My brothers have both got lighter eyes and hair. Dad was British with no European or other heritage as far as I know.

Highlands23 · 16/05/2021 18:05

Totally agree! I’m from Balearic Islands and lived here all my life true white British don’t have the same dark brown with the shape that the med does. It’s rare and the only ones I’ve know have had Spanish /Italian/Portuguese parents of grandparents so something in the line.

It’s just not common at all those dark brown Med eyes here or the shape.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/05/2021 18:10

@Bul21ia

I agree OP I usually wonder if I see a white person with dark brown eyes if they have something in them.
Many people of Celtic heritage have dark brown eyes and hair.
funtimefrank · 16/05/2021 18:21

My dad was 3/4 Welsh 1/4 Irish so pretty Celtic and he had super dark brown skin and eyes. No other European blood (he did family tree).

Frannyhy · 16/05/2021 18:31

I’ve got dark brown hair, light skin and eyes like piss holes in the snow.

Lemonwoe · 16/05/2021 18:35

I’m in Scotland and most people I know are brown eyed, many of them dark brown eyes (myself and my family included)

Pinkblueberry · 16/05/2021 18:42

YABU. Of course Caucasian people commonly have brown eyes. Just like brown hair. Judging ethnicity by eye colour now - i have to say it’s an original and interesting thought, although completely bonkers.

Neonprint · 16/05/2021 18:45

Yabu

Just to add to everyone else telling you.
