Does this sound like an infection?

Posting for traffic.

5yo DS was smacked in the mouth today by a child at school with a toy car. As a result he's cut the inside of his lip on a tooth. He's been swollen but fine. Until tonight - he's woken up with a fever, complaining of pain, it's hard to see the cut as it's on the inside at the top but it's very swollen and a bit yellow looking.

Could this be an infection??

It would be a fast infection, causing a fever that quickly, but it's certainly possible, especially with the yellow bit (pus?). Toy car is unlikely to be clean, probably covered in all sorts of nasty bugs. I'd call 111 and see if you can get some out of hours help.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/05/2021 23:34

Yes I'd say so. The yellow could be pus and I'm pretty sure a fever is a sign of infection. I hope he gets better quickly, poor thing.

It could be an infection especially as it’s a bit yellow looking. If you are in the uk you will need to organise a covid test for ds(pcr test)
It’s obviously the last thing you want to think about but unfortunately without a negative test you can’t rule that out. If you are concerned give 111 a call for advice.

As above, very quick for a fever but if you're concerned call 111.

Can you get him to rinse his mouth with warm salty water that should help a wee bit in the meantime till you can get it checked out. Calpol as well if feverish.

As others have said, I'd be surprised as that would be one hell of a fast moving infection. Pus and fever wouldn't appear that quickly if it only happened today.

Have you taken his temperature with a digital thermometer? Are you certain he has a fever? If he has a fever, call 111 and ask for advice.

Do you have any bonjela junior gel (do not use the one for adults) in the house which you could apply to the cut? It will ease the pain and reduce swelling.
