Transvaginal Scan on period

Candycrush426 · 14/05/2021 19:11

Hi all I’m due to have an abdominal scan and transvaginal scan tomorrow. My period (well I think it’s my period) has arrived two weeks early. Has anyone ever had an internal scan while on their period? I have waited 4 months for this scan as I’ve been having ovary pain and irregular bleeding so don’t want to cancel. Worried generally about my health and then irregular spotting/bleeding so don’t want to wait another 4 months.

What is everyone’s experiences with internal scans while on their period? I feel so embarrassed 😞

I have op and it was totally fine.
If you use tampons you will need to remove it before hand obviously, but it will be no different for you.

They perform these every single day so don't be embarrassed. I hope it goes ok for you Thanks

I did. Last week. Nothing to worry about! They are completely used to it and will not bat an eyelid!

Good luck and try not to worry too much! Xx

cravingpistachiocake · 14/05/2021 19:15

I really wouldn’t worry. Bear in mind, they scan pregnant women who are bleeding all the time, as well as menstruating women. It really won’t be an issue, they won’t care at all.

I have too (years ago) and it was absolutely fine. Not even messy or anything which surprised me. Do go ahead with the appointment.

Candycrush426 · 14/05/2021 19:17

Thank you!

That’s helped ease my mind. I have really bad period pains hope it won’t make me tense up!

I thought the same OP and it was fine. No tensing at all. I barely felt anything really xx

Vilanelle · 14/05/2021 19:58

I had one. The woman said not to worry and that they regularly scan women who are miscarrying

ChampionOfTheSun · 14/05/2021 19:59

I had a few when I was bleeding in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, it was fine Flowers

Bimblybomeyelash · 14/05/2021 20:03

I tensed up during my scan and the nurse just got me to insert the ‘probe’(?) myself.

Treaclepie19 · 14/05/2021 20:09

I have too. I phoned them because because was nervous but they weren't at all phased. Gave me extra tissue to clean up and were very kind

Treaclepie19 · 14/05/2021 20:09

Posted too soon. I hope all is well for you.

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 14/05/2021 20:12

I had one and was bleeding so heavily it all came out onto the bed thing, and it was fine! No one was surprised or even mentioned it!

I had mine not so long ago. It was trans vaginal but they first did a ultrasound to see if they could find something. This wasn’t showing anything so went onto do the transvaginal scan (within the same appt)

I have an introverted uterus which she explained was the reason or likely the reason I was struggling and in pain. She couldn’t get to where she needed without moving it around. It hurt like hell.

Eventually we gave up and re booked for after my period.

Surprisingly there wasn’t much mess.

When I went back, they opted to do the same thing. Ultrasound first. But apparently the person who was doing the scan was higher up and more experienced and decided the ultrasound was enough. Thankfully I didn’t have to do the transvaginal scan again.

They’re really good and nice and understanding.

With the first I was in so much pain I kept tensing up but she handled it really well.

I had ovary pain too. It lasted around 2 -3 months all together. They ruled out eptopic pregnancy and everything else. I’m glad I had it done. Although they found nothing the pain eventually went away. Though it was daily pain that really did take over my life.

Sharp pain would wake me up in the middle of the night. Intense random waves of pain or cramping. Really unpredictable. Simply couldn’t pinpoint what was triggering it. Felt nauseous to the point I couldn’t move. Head spinning etc

The scan was peace of mind as I recovered from whatever it was. GP , nurses and sonographer were understanding and super helpful.

Hope you get it sorted. You’re doing the right thing getting it checked out Flowers

Not on my period but during a miscarriage so similar. They do this all of the time so won’t bat an eyelid.

MishMashMummy · 14/05/2021 21:02

Don’t be embarrassed! It will be totally fine, and they won’t mind at all.

Candycrush426 · 14/05/2021 21:51

Thank you everyone. You definitely have put my mind at ease and it’s really reassuring 💘

Candycrush good luck! Obviously not my business but I'm actually interested to hear what they find...I've had a weird 2 week cycle and some pains recently too, sounds very similar, I really must book to see the gp about it

Greenmarmalade · 14/05/2021 23:38

I’ve had this too! They were so good and respectful, it was a really positive experience actually.

CPsRus · 14/05/2021 23:40

I had one on my period and it was fine, she had seen it many times. Also, she was really nice and showed me the picture of my uterus contracting and expanding to expel my lining and it was kind of amazing to see actually! I got paper towels and a sink to clean up privately afterwards.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 15/05/2021 00:57

Not a period exactly but I had a transvag scan when I had a cervical ectropion and was bleeding. I told the sonographer and he said it was fine, they put a condom on the wand anyway as stamdard practice and he just gave me extra tissue to go under my bum. Even though mine was a man he still didn't bat an eyelid.

Candycrush426 · 15/05/2021 10:21

Hi everyone, so I went for my scan and the lady was absolutely lovely made me feel really at ease. For anyone that wanted to know they found a few cysts on both my ovaries. They will then send this over to my go and consultant now.
