To Take Their Uber Eats Deliveries?

Provocative headline for traffic.

We live next to an HMO. It's had numerous issues including a domestic disturbance with a knife last year where the police were called so we keep our distance.

As of last week someone there has started getting food delivered to our home. It's hard to explain but they're using the first bit of our address & the rest of theirs. It's got to be deliberate because despite the proximity our addresses are actually very different (due to street layout).

Last week a driver rang our bell at 11.30pm. Yesterday they had one delivered at lunchtime, which is when I checked the driver's phone and saw what they'd done with the address. I'm particularly on edge as we had burglars ringing our bell at 2am a couple of weeks ago so don't want to open the door to anyone I'm not expecting (especially at night).

If this continues WIBU to take it in and, if they come knocking, say I don't know what they're talking about?

Obviously my concern is whether the Uber Eats driver might be penalised in any way - if they are then I wouldn't consider it.

It is entirely possible the app has messed up. Ours continuously defaults to the wrong number because that number is accessible from the main road (whereas ours is in a private and gated close). Just get in touch with Uber, drivers change all the time so you should try to rectify it at source.

Could be the app. I tried it twice and it changed the house number both times. So it ended up at the same house twice despite me double checking I'd put the correct one. Given up with now!

@chesirecat99

Deliveroo does something weird with my address if I use the auto location finder. Even if I manually put the address in, it puts the pin in a house in an entirely different street. Plus, my address doesn't exist on some postcode autolook up.

Just put a note through the door.

Yes, Deliveroo keeps insisting I live next door when I use that, despite me putting the right number in. Luckily our neighbours don’t mind and we rarely have takeaways in any case.
EssentialHummus · 14/05/2021 16:08

@FishintheStream

Could you put a note on your door that says "We are NOT "House name", it is next door". I know it's not ideal, but if you don't want to answer the door or deal with your neighbours, it's the only solution I can think of.
I'd be doing this too.

because of the street layout I'm always getting people knocking on the door for over the road, I just point them to the right house. My take away was delivered accidently to them and they took it in and kept it. The driver had to pay for the replacement.

A few months later the man over the road was murdered on holiday. And still when ever they are mentioned some one still says "and they stole your chinese"

wingsnthat · 14/05/2021 16:15

Also Uber eats allows customers to track the location of their driver, so if they see that the driver was at your house and then the app marks it as delivered, they know it’s at yours. So definitely don’t take the order in and keep it because they’ll kick off

TheLastLotus · 14/05/2021 16:30

I think putting up a sign saying ‘We are not House Name’ is a good shout. Also ‘if phone number is not ending xxx we know nothing about this delivery’.

Could you call the delivery company and have their number blacklisted? I know pp have mentioned that you can’t but it may depend on the specific company

TheLastLotus · 14/05/2021 16:31

@kimlo you’re too nice, if they’d kept my takeaway I’d not be redirecting people after that

PercyPiginaWig · 14/05/2021 16:37

I just don't want to get involved.
You don't want to get involved OP but you would take their food which will be the most likely way to have them knock your door. Hmm

SallyCinnabon · 14/05/2021 16:38

@wingsnthat

If an Uber eats driver knocks on your door, just tell them they have the wrong address and refuse the delivery. They will phone the customer’s number, which is attached to the order, and presumably the occupant will tell the driver where they are.

Alternatively, you can point the driver in the right direction if you know who it is/where they live

Tbh it’s either an Uber maps/location error, or maybe the occupants made fraudulent refund claims and got their own address banned 🤷🏼‍♀️ Either way, if they’re as scary as you make out, definitely don’t take their food in. It’s drama you do not need

This 👍🏻

I am another vote for it might be the app.

I live in a block of flats that has a name but doesn't have a street number, so my address would be Flat 1, High St Flats, High Street. Most places don't allow me to just put the building name, but the problem is that they don't read Flat 2 High Street Flats they just see 2 High Street so ibhavr had drivers down the other end of the street at #2 with my delivery.

Fortunately the lady who lives there is lovely and I make sure all the local delivery drivers know the issue so they only ever do it once.
