Baby and toddler clothes are super expensive!

DS is nearly a year old and is growing like a weed. Obviously I want to clothe my child. We don't have friends with children and family with children live overseas, so hand-me-downs is not an option.

Everywhere I look for clothes is so expensive! Surely children's clothing should be cheaper, given that it will only fit for a few months? I've tried supermarkets, but a a pair of trousers is like £10! The only affordable things I have found are the likes of PatPat, and I don't like the thought of using what I can only assume is fast fashion and child labour. It's horrible for the environment and human rights.

DS loves messy play and will typically wear 2 outfits per day (there is mud, paint, and food on everything...I don't mind stains, but draw the line if he's wet and sticky!), and we haven't got a tumble dryer, so need to line dry everything.

Where do you buy clothing for your kids?

Asda. I got 10 t shirts for £20 for my 4 year old son recently. Trousers are £4-7. Good value I think.

Try local Facebook groups, ours is always giving away so much stuff on there, bundles of clothes etc

LemonLemonLemon · 13/05/2021 11:11

I always buy bundles from Facebook market place! I refuse to buy full price - some outfits cost more than what I buy for myself!

I buy good quality stuff from eBay - Boden, frugi, scandi brands, and more often than not I get back what I paid for them when I sell them on again, if they've not got any stains, and even with a few marks I get something back, so it's a bit like a rotation system.

Smartiepants79 · 13/05/2021 11:14

Well cheap cloths will have been produced in a cheap (and possible unethical) way.
If you want to have morals you have to be prepared to pay more for something that had cost more to produce.
Second hand is your friend. Have you tried charity shops?

TwoAndAnOnion · 13/05/2021 11:16

^^ that's a bit of a sweeping statement, all the main retailers are aware of their suppliers these days and have policies accordingly, they audit and inspect.

Google is your friend here.

But in answer to your question, supermarkets have reasonably priced clothes for all age groups.

Apparently my local area is sparse - I can only find people selling either infant clothes or clothes for older children. I'm not really willing to be in the car with DS for over an hour at the moment, but maybe I'm being ridiculous about that.

I will try ASDA and keep checking Marketplace!

Most of our stuff came from Sainsburys at that age. You don't need to be having him in two pairs of trousers a day - get some leggings or tracksuit bottoms that are easier to get n and off and cheaper.

Also, second hand.

Overthebow · 13/05/2021 11:17

I’ve actually found them pretty cheap. £3 dresses in H&M and Tesco, Five vests for £6 at Asda.

MooseBreath · 13/05/2021 11:18

Charity shops where I am are weirdly expensive. That was my first port of call.

OP posts:
romdowa · 13/05/2021 11:19

Charity shops have a lot of good quality children's clothes and they are usually very reasonable in price

idontlikealdi · 13/05/2021 11:19

Just looked at sainsburys - x2joggers £10 x2leggings £7

EmeraldShamrock · 13/05/2021 11:20

You get lots of clothes bundles on gumtree etc for a good bargain. Primark is cheaper than the supermarket.

LittleTiger007 · 13/05/2021 11:20

eBay! I get tonnes of really good things there including brand new with tags for a fraction of the new price. Small children don’t wear their clothes out before they grow out of them. When your child is a bit older then it will be different and they are likely to wear holes in certain things. I’m planning on buying from supermarkets for play clothes.

Checkingout811 · 13/05/2021 11:21

YABU
I don’t think children’s clothes are expensive. Multipacks are your friend.

NCNCNCNCNCNCNCNCNC · 13/05/2021 11:21

I buy secondhand bundles from vinted. Usually only pay £1-2 an item. I look out for users who have listed a lot so I can get, say, a bundle of tops, bundle of bottoms and a coat and then postage is less and sometimes you get a discount.

Bul21ia · 13/05/2021 11:23

Ahhh I think the babies stages were the cheapest by far OP.

George is great for multi packs and Primark.

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/05/2021 11:23

They are expensive, but like a pp I tend to buy good quality stuff from Ebay/Facebook market and then sell on and get my money back. I have a revolving 'child clothes' fund in my Paypal. Even slightly stained Frugi still sells as 'playwear'!

I tend to have mostly nice things for each age range, and then supplement that with a cheap multi-pack of t-shirts and leggings as spares. Cute clothes are one of my particular joys of having a baby/toddler, so I'm happy to spend a bit on things I like. In a few years he'll probably refuse to wear what I like!

Megan2018 · 13/05/2021 11:27

Ebay and facebook for bundles although I also get gifted a lot.
NEXT clearance too-if you check in the middle of the night (I had a poor sleeper) the best bargains appear and are gone by morning. I buy out of season for the next size up (so DD is 18-24 now but I am buying 2-3 autumn/winter at the moment).

Multipacks from supermarkets too especially for nursery.

andivfmakes3 · 13/05/2021 11:27

I have 3 month old twins - boy/girl - I shop the sales online at least once a week and buy ahead for the next size up or even further if it's been reduced a lot - next clearance, TU Sainsbury sales etc - it's only as expensive as you make it

Lou98 · 13/05/2021 11:34

Asda and Primark are both good for kids clothes

MooseBreath · 13/05/2021 11:36

Cool, glad to be told I'm being unreasonable! Smile I will head to Primary and ASDA this week and keep checking for second hand!

OP posts:
Hoowhoowho · 13/05/2021 11:36

Vinted, eBay and sales , where I buy ahead for the next year. I buy nothing new and full price.

Jobseeker19 · 13/05/2021 11:37
