On the back of the overrated places thread, id like to know about places people pleasantly suprised by, or just places you love generally.

I only holiday in the uk we usually camp.

I love north devon. Ilfracombe is stunning. People said it was "chavvy" , but i love it there. Love seeing Verity.

Elan Valley in Mid Wales is stunning

We visited Inverness a couple of years ago and I thought it should be more famous. What a stunning location!

OMG can't believe someone mentioned the Savernake Forest as a holiday destination on here - don't they know it's gone down in MN history as the most terrifying place on earth? Grin

Not necessarily underrated, but somewhere it had never previously occurred to me to go, and was stunned by how beautiful it was: Pembrokeshire. Stunning beaches. It's like the most beautiful bits of Cornwall but with fewer tourists!

Mintjulia · 14/05/2021 05:10

I'm curious now, how Is the Savernake scary? It's all Beech trees and bluebells

MiloAndEddie · 14/05/2021 07:01

Forest of Dean was lovely and also south Devon: shaldon/teignmouth

MinnieMountain · 14/05/2021 07:06

Pembrokeshire isn’t overlooked. Just maybe in comparison to Cornwall.

A mumsnetter had a very scary /spooky experience there and wrote a gripping post about it. It’s probably in classics.

Not sure if they strictly count as the UK but I think the Channel Islands are underrated as a tourist destination. Lots of lovely beaches.

DD and I like to do day trips when we are staying at our caravan (Somerset) and we were most surprised by Exmouth of all places! We’d been to Exeter shopping and wanted a bit of beach/lounging around. We were surprised by how lovely it was, from the beach to the prom to the marina. We’d definitely like to spend a weekend there soon.

Some years ago my DH started a new job and he could only take 5 days off work. We had left it late to book a holiday abroad so we went to Tenby. It was such a lovely surprise, had a perfect family break and the weather was sunny. The heavens opened all the way home so we were really lucky with the weather.

I don't know why we don't holiday in the UK, we had a few days in Northumberland last year, Cornwall was full! Alnwick Castle was great. We are off to Devon this summer to somewhere I have always wanted to go but never got round to organising.

Thanks to covid I have my eye on St Ives and Southwold!

We like Exmouth too, someone moaned about it on the other thread. I have been taking the dc there since they were little, just a shame they are too big for the park now is it’s a lovely park, there used to be cafe that was a old train carriage too but that’s gone. We went last year when lockdown eased and it was very quiet. We will probably camp near Exeter this year and visit exmouth.

You can also go on ferry trips to Torquay or Paignton or go on the shorter ferry trip to Dawlish Warren, across the wild, white sand dunes for the day. Amazing place and totally underrated!
