To sit in my car where people can see me on lunch?

There’s not really much around near to where I work and nobody seems to take their lunch break, usually just eating at at their desk (yuk).

I have to get away or otherwise I can’t concentrate so I sit in my car. My car can be seen from the office (it’s literally just outside the window) and I guess I just feel a bit weird sitting in my car eating knowing that I can be seen.

Nobody’s ever said anything to my face but aibu to think I do look a bit strange? Is it normal to eat in cars? I want to eat and watch cat Tiktok videos at lunch, I don’t want to be disturbed hence I don’t stay at the desk.

I suppose I just feel self conscious because nobody else I work with does it and it’s a fairly small team and office.

I used to leave the office and go to the nearby shops just for a bit of fresh air and leg stretching. There was a kitchen where you could probably eat in but it was a bit small and most people seemed to eat during the morning at their desk.
I don't remembering going in the kitchen much because I brewed up twice and was banned. Apparently making bad tea was highly frowned upon and they stopped me from being the tea girl. Shame. :-D

Someone was always having a birthday and bringing cake in. Now that was good.

Nothing wrong with it.. it's up to you what you do with your lunch break as long as it's within legal limits.

Every Tuesday lunchtime I sit in my car in the car park and have a therapy session via Zoom. I can be seen and my colleagues come and go around me. A few know what I'm doing but it's no ones business but mine.

Rockbird · 13/05/2021 17:26

Honestly, if I was parked that close to my desk I'd get a window shade for the driver's side and be nicely hidden!

Didicat · 13/05/2021 17:26

Reverse park in so you are facing away from the building.

Overdale · 13/05/2021 17:35

Not only did I eat my lunch in my car I also had a nap

hamptonmummy · 13/05/2021 17:38

I've always done this, my whole office thought it was hilarious!!

Pinkblueberry · 13/05/2021 17:40

Nothing wrong with it at all IMO. I’d find it weird to sit in my car and not drive off though - my job is quite tiring so I could imagine myself having a bit of a brain fart moment and driving off after eating, only to realise half way home it wasn’t the end of the working day yet.

Kona84 · 13/05/2021 17:43

I’d totally do this. Podcast on, sandwich out.
You could always turn the car around so your not facing them

Bertiebiscuit · 13/05/2021 17:46

I think you are wise to leave your workplace at lunch time no matter where you go - "Al desko" is a plague and very bad for mental and physical health

cherish123 · 13/05/2021 17:47

Good idea to get out. Could you drive somewhere, even around the corner.?

CoelacanthSharpener · 13/05/2021 17:54

I used to do this all the time in a previous job. It was useless trying to take my break in the office, I'd be disturbed all the time, so I'd eat my sandwich and read a book or listen to the radio in the car. I worked near a cathedral and university, both of which had loads of parking, so sometimes I'd park at one of those and wander round a bit.

Egghead81 · 13/05/2021 17:54

Is it spoiling your lunch? Feeling awkward?
If so - then, I’d drive around the corner!

OldGeezer · 13/05/2021 17:55

At one clinic I did an 09.00 to 19.00 (or later) spending 90-95% of the time on my feet, the “staff room” was effectively a wide corridor with some stacking chairs and a sink. Of course I sat in the car Winter and Summer - 10 minutes eating and 45-50 minutes sleeping. Besides, if you’re in the car park you can’t come to the phone/pop out to “just have a quick word” with a client.

Mary46 · 13/05/2021 17:59

Did this alot as I temped. Had few mags in car. Found staff canteens can be clicky. Prob got few weird looks Grin

MollyMinniesMum · 13/05/2021 18:03

Drive somewhere

Doghead · 13/05/2021 18:03

Confused as to what's 'yuk' about eating at your desk.

teraculum29 · 13/05/2021 18:04

I dont blame you. Your work should have a staff room so it can be used to eat lunch.
But judging by my work place, the staff room is not appealing at all and I do prefer to eat my lunch away from it.
ie car

languising · 13/05/2021 18:05

@MollyMinniesMum

Drive somewhere
Exactly
Waiting423 · 13/05/2021 18:08

I used to eat my lunch quick and then just go out for a walk … nowhere great to go but I’d just do circuits of the block

PinkMice · 13/05/2021 18:09

I used to drive around the corner. It felt nice to get away from the building!

Ughmaybenot · 13/05/2021 18:11

This is literally all I’ve ever done Grin
I just need that time away. I hate the boring grub room yap and I spend the whole rest of my day with these people so yea nah, I need a break. Sometimes I’ll sit and read, sometimes I’ll ring a mate for a chat and other times, I set an alarm, get in the back and have a nap.
Believe it or not, I do actually like my colleagues, both in this job and the previous Grin

Alleycat1 · 13/05/2021 18:20

Would a tinted back window help or one of those foil things s against frost on the back window?

NoMLMbots · 13/05/2021 18:33

Sitting eating in your car is fine.

Watching Tic Toc videos of cats Hmm

Frazzled2207 · 13/05/2021 18:40

My husband would get very cross if he had to pick up sandwich crumbs etc in our (shared) car.
I don’t think it’s particularly odd. I’d rather find a park bench in the fresh air though.

goingtotown · 13/05/2021 18:43

Move your car.
