AIBU?

If You've been shut for months due to a Pandemic and Can Now Reopen

Why would you then book an appointment with someone, to not show up?

It's a simple enough request I have.

Beauticians and salons have been all over the press, begging to reopen. Saying they've lost money, are about to collapse under the financial strain

So there's me, desperate to get my eyebrows threaded. I'm cack handed and have been trying to tidy the worst bits myself, but they're really not shaped right.

So, I've left it a few weeks since they reopened to let the rush die down. I'm having my make up trial for my wedding this weekend so really need them done.

The lady who did them pre-covid is no longer available, long story. So I'm looking for someone new.

There are 3 salons in my town. I've called all 3. One no longer had someone doing threading and was only offering limited services.

The other two I have made appointments with in the last week.

The first one cancelled the morning of the appointment. No explanation, just an email notification.

At least they had the courtesy to at least do that.

Had an appointment for today at 11.45 at Salon number 3.

Got there at 11.35. DP drove me as it was tipping down. I said to him, it looks like there's no one there, how weird. So he suggested, perhaps they are out the back. Give them a knock.

Did that. No answer. Post on the mat.
Lady from a shop next door pops her head out and says "oh she's not in today, she was there yesterday but not seen her today".
So I go back to the car, and ring. No answer. I text, it's read, no answer.

What the hell is the point? Why bitch and whine and complain about not being able to work and be open, when the minute you are, you mess people, paying customers, in my case would've been a regular as well, around.

I am so angry

DP of course reckons I'm being out of order or over the top to be fucking livid. I just don't need the stress and now it's looking like my only option is to rearrange the MUA as she won't be able to do a proper trial when my eyebrows are such a mess. I will also have to go into the big town too, and no doubt get messed about there.

Do these people not want customers? Have they enjoyed the months off? Why book me in at all?

So angry!

Anyone else had similar shite service?

Yabu. Unless you have heard this particular beautician moaning about being unable to work.

You are also being unreasonable to be “livid” over eyebrows. And this is from a women who religiously gets her eye brows done.

Can you not just pluck them yourself?

Don't get me wrong I agree it's shite but I've plucked mine all my adult life and it will do a good enough job that you can still have your trial I'm sure. I wouldn't let it ruin your other plans. Don't let the bastards win!

Total overreaction. It's eyebrows Confused

Can you not just go ot one of the walk in eyebrow places or pluck them yourself? I think its a bit ridiculous to postpone your wedding trial because your eyebrows aren't perfect

How did you arrange the second appointment? I'm guessing there was a problem with the online booking system or something. Plus with covid isolation regs its quite easy for someone to suddenly have to have time off work

None round here are doing walk in

And it's not the eyebrows I'm angry about, it's the fact that someone has booked an appointment and not shown up. It smacks of unprofessionalism.
This specific salon did indeed whinge in the local press actually. So yes, I can say that. She complained that she has built her business up and had customers waiting who can't be seen as Boris had closed them all.
So why not show up?

And I'm also annoyed that as a result of someone else being a timewaster, I'm going to have to mess my MUA around.

I'm not able to pluck them no,I really am not good at it, I'm dyspraxic for starters with shit eyesight.

Is it too much to ask for someone to show up to a booked appointment? Consider their website says about a cancellation fee policy for less than 24 hours notice. Yet she doesn't ring or answer the phone?

Seriously, I get you’re annoyed but your MUA should be able to deal with less than perfect eyebrows. You don’t need to make this a bigger deal than it is!

Did you get confirmation of the booking? Could it be that wires were crossed and the day she thought you were booked in was not today?

SmallPrawnEnergy · 11/05/2021 13:31

You’re right it’s very unprofessional to allow a client to turn up to a pre-scheduled appointment and not be available. The fact that’s it’s “just eyebrows” doesn’t negate the fact the salon have acted unprofessionally. But all you can do is vote with your feet and leave a negative review on their social media if they have one.

That is bad not to let people booked in know they can't be arsed. I don't think it's overly surprising many aren't offering certain services anymore, my friend found alternative work during the pandemic and just has insurance to do it at home now very part time rather than in the salon she used to work in. I booked a hair app as there was a promotion on, it said book for x date and recieve y for half price. Checked when I booked and they said yep it'll definitely be that price, got there and they said actually we can't afford to honour them and got the hump when I left.

I work for a national company and we have several unplanned closures a week as a member of staff has tested positive and everyone has to isolate immediately we are notified. Right now it's usually a LFT and the subsequent PCR is negative so we can re-open after a day or two but it is a pain. If they can't go in they may not have your contact details.

Honestly, you don’t need to cancel your MUA because of this. When I had my wedding make up done, I couldn’t have a trial, and on the wedding day she had to work with the eyebrows I had as nobody could do them and I cannot thread or pluck my own eyebrows to save my life. She’s an MUA. She’ll work around it; and she’ll likely know how to trim them a bit if it’s required anyway.

It sucks that you’ve been let down, but don’t let this spiral into something massive. Keep the MUA appointment.

Well that's reassuring, I've never had someone else do my make up in my life, I don't wear a lot usually (I'm pretty shit at that too)
It was just so annoying to be sitting there, wasting my time and DPs as well.

She did have my contact number and had confirmed too. I would understand if it was a Covid situation so she had to isolate, but to not answer her mobile (which was on the confirmation) really made me even more annoyed.

I have indeed left a review saying not to bother as the woman is a timewaster.

I've just got so much to do this week, we are 6 weeks away (well, possibly. Probably. At this point in the roadmap I won't know for definite until the week before), and I so just want everyone on the ball to make life easier and less stressful.

I do wish the lady who did them was still operating, she was brill.

They could have asked the lady in the shop next door, who they are obviously on good enough terms with, or a friend or someone, to stick up a notice on the shop or or something IF this had happened and IF they didnt have ops contact details (which seems unlikely as I've had to provide details for every meal/hairdresser/beauty appointment I've made in the last six months!)

I agree with you op and I'd be reviewing them saying so...

Seems harsh
Is she is a single person business?

You don't know why she didn't show. I appreciate it's annoying but if she's a one woman band, an emergency could happen with no way for her to contact you.

Your MUA should be able to cope with your eyebrows as they are. Just mention you hope to have them threaded before the actual day.

If you get this stressed about your eyebrows then I dread to think his you'll cope with a real problem.
If your MUA can't cope with wayward eyebrows then I'd be questioning her skills. Not everybody has their eyebrows done.

YANBU. My friend is a beautician and has the opposite, appointments booked and clients not turning up, which is criminal when she could have rebooked the appointment and desperately needs the money after months of being closed.

So I don't see why it isn't just as annoying from your perspective. you arrange a time to suit, you go out of your way to get there, and then they are closed. Even more annoying when as you say they were moaning about having to be closed.

She could have contacted you, my friend has all her clients in her mobile, she would have texted round everyone if she had to cancel an appointment.

OMG I said it's not that I'm stressed about my eyebrows, did you not bother to read the thread before you decided to act off?

It's called professionalism. You don't make an appointment then not turn up with no explanation. No apology. Especially as I said when on her website it says she has the audacity to charge people a late cancellation fee if she isn't told at least 24 hours of a customer wanting to cancel.

Yet she allowed me to get to her in good time, mess about looking for parking, stand about in heavy rain knocking on her door and then read a text message and ignored it.

It's attitudes like that that will kill a small business just as quick as being shut for lockdown.

I've still not heard a peep out of her

As for my Make up, I'm not proficient and it's not something I've ever had done before. So I wanted and assumed I needed to get them done to get the proper full effect of what it will look like. I'm purely a tinted moisturizer/mascara/lip balm person the rest of the time.

As first impressions go, it was appalling. And when I said about it on a local group, others said she has done the same to them recently- I was trying to find out who else is available nearby

Sorry but I can't abide rudeness and this was really rude of her

And she would be right to be pissed off.

People have better things to do than wait around for others who lack basic manners.

I don't blame your friend for being cross about no shows, it's their livelihood and as you say, they can probably rearrange another appointment, especially at the moment.

I bet they hate others in the industry behaving like this.
Like I said, one last week cancelled with barely any notice, or apologies, let alone an excuse. But at least I didn't trek out and waste my time.
