Vegan fast food that looks like meat

veganlookslikemeat · 11/05/2021 11:20

E.g. all the new vegan options that chains have been coming out with recently. All the vegan fake meat burgers/subs/pastries etc (Burger King, Subway, KFC, Greggs etc)
They all look like the real thing they are trying to mimic so how can you actually tell you've been given the vegan option and not meat by accident?!
AIBU to want a vegan option that you can clearly tell is vegan... or can someone share how to differentiate these vegan items with the non vegan counterparts?

I don't want vegan food that looks and tastes like meat. I don't want to eat meat. But those who want vegan food that looks and tastes like meat are usually trying to give up meat so would likely enjoy it.

BlueVelvetStars · 11/05/2021 14:06

@myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses

I don't understand why you'd want to eat something that looks like meat, if vegan/vegetarian. Never made sense to me.

me either Confused

For the same reason people use dildos. Looks the same, feels the same, fills a hole, but no hearts are broken in the process.

Ha ha, now there I'd have to disagree - no substitute at all. Grin

Because we object the utter barbarity of the meat industry not because the look of meat offends us. Why do people keep making this stupid observation?

Your answer would have been enough, thank you.

As I mentioned previously, our choices of what we eat/don't eat do not make any of us stupid.

We all have our different reasons, of which a few people have answered.

ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 11/05/2021 14:33

Not a vegan but I have a child with allergies and he appreciates food that looked like what everybody else eats so he can pretend he's like everybody else.

So if you're a vegan teen and the group wants to go to KFC, you can still join in if you like the vegan option available.

NowtSoQueerAsFolk · 11/05/2021 14:35

The lack of comprehension on this thread by some individuals is frankly astonishing.

It must be genuine, because nobody would choose to make themselves look that way... would they? 🤔

Kpo58 · 11/05/2021 14:35

FWIW when doing some marketing I saw a huge uptick in sales when I changed the order of the words - from "Vegan X" to "X (Vegan)" as evidently the word vegan at the beginning just made some people stop reading.

I wonder if that's because people think that a vegan cake for example has random chemicals in it so that it can pretend to be a real one whereas a Cake (vegan) is a normal cake that happens to also be naturally vegan?

I'd view a vegan salad with suspicion because I'd expect to be vegan by default, whereas salad (vegan) is a normal salad, but just confirming to vegans that it's safe to eat.

NowtSoQueerAsFolk · 11/05/2021 14:38

I'm fairly sure nobody said that they do. The continual 'i don't understand' type comments, however, especially when they have been answered several times, are, quite frankly, stupid. Just because a comment is stupid, it doesn't necessarily follow that the commenter is.

funtimefrank · 11/05/2021 14:38

I am sure it's somewhere in the thread but fake meat makes me sad because as a veggie of over 30 years, I mostly stopped eating meat because I really really don't like it, especially the texture.

So when the non meat option is fake meat like it is in many places these days I am stuck on something to pick.

But I understand that I am not the key market for a lot of these products so there we go.

Brownteddybear · 11/05/2021 14:41

@Roboticcarrot

Processed vegan food is as bad for you as any other

Well yes, but they're not being marketed as being healthy, but just like anyone's diet, they're fine in moderation. It gives options when out and about, that instead of having to take a packed lunch or just have a plain salad, you can eat with family and friends when out and about if you so wish.

That's not true a lot of money is spent on marketing some fake meat/vegan products as either healthy for us and/or the planet. Which is misleading to say the least.

Who cares?

People who are vegan for health reasons are perfectly capable of choosing which foods to include in their diet Confused

I can't see where I said that vegans were incapable of choosing healthy foods for their diet Confused

I’ve been a vegetarian for 25 years. I can’t remember what meat tastes like! But I do like a lot of veggie substitutes as I like my food to have some chew! I don’t really believe that these meat substitutes are indistinguishable from meat though.

I dont eat meat for ethical reason, but I love the taste of it
KaleSlayer · 11/05/2021 14:48

There is a distinctly preachy vegan shop local to me (the windows are covered in the sort of literature you'd expect about milk drinkers torturing calves).

I went in because I needed some vegetarian marshmallows, and had DDog with me. Like most vegan places, they are very dog friendly. Unfortunately, DDog managed to offend them - they offered him a vegan dog biscuit, which he promptly spat out on the floor blush I can't see the dog giving up meat any time soon...

Strange that your dog wouldn’t eat it. Most dogs will eat anything. My dogs eat lots of fruit and veg as snacks, the vet recommends it. I’m vegan and my dogs also try to eat my food.

Also, a friend has a dog who had to have a meat free diet for a while due to a health condition. The dog coped fine and seemed to like the food.

But that probably doesn’t fit your narrative of ‘preachy vegan’ and dogs not eating it.

BlueVelvetStars · 11/05/2021 14:51

My dog is on Hepatic Diet too.

I've found in restaurants the Vegetarian option is usually not a fake meat dish. It's usually a pasta dish or risotto. I haven't been to BK in years but I did used to love their Bean Burgers, do they still do those or not?

My dog isn't especially fussy, but he isn't a hoover who will eat anything he can get his jaws on either. He also turns up his nose at Bonio style biscuits and shellfish.

He was quite keen on the idea of sharing one of the KFC vegan burgers though, and he's quite partial to a raw carrot, and raw brocolli.

But vegan dog treats weren't to his liking. The shop owners looked rather offended...

I've been a vegetarian for 20 years by the way.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 11/05/2021 14:54

Omg it's not that hard to understand .. I choose not to eat meat because I don't want to eat animals but I was brought up as a child eating meat and like the taste ..

Yes, they still sell bean burgers

bishbashbosh99 · 11/05/2021 14:56

lol, it tastes nothing like it. It's actually half decent but really, no one would ever be fooled by fake meat
