Hi there I’m just looking for advice or help my dog was being looked after at a sitters while we were on a camping trip this weekend , our dog has been there and stayed over at least 4/5 different times while we’ve been away last time he was there when I got him back I had to take him to vet at he had got stabbed in the eye with a thorn bush sitter never said to me I noticed on my own as soon as he was home and rushed him straight in as he had diabeties any way sitter said he hadn’t realised and I assumed it was an honest mistake and send him back he went on thur , I got email from sitter on Friday to say the dog was doing great I emailed him Saturday and thanked him for update ! We got back Sunday night and I emailed him to say we were home and I was looking forward to coming to get our dog in the morning as we arranged he called me shortly after this and asked me to come get dog as he hadn’t stopped throwing up since Saturday morning now he had both mine and my partners numbers he had my father in laws contact details too and vet who was open till 4 on sat he said he became extremely ill sat morning and had been ill ever since , I had made it clear every time
I dropped him off if he ever became sick he was to call us or vet straight away as even a stomach bug could kill him because of his blood sugars , I rushed to get him and took him to out of hours vet and then today we got told he had kidney failure and was best to put him down there no sure what pushed him over edge in the end but he’s gone now and we are heart broken the dog sitter was no help and wouldn’t explain anything other than he got not well on Saturday morning , why he didn’t call anyone I don’t know ! I don’t know if I should report him to the dog sitting site (rovers) or just leave it ?

I’m really sorry that your dog has died. There are a lot of unanswered questions for you and it’s understandable that you feel a mixture of anger sadness and maybe guilt around the circumstances. Yes report the sitter as they didn’t even inform you that your dog had become ill. That might make you feel that there is some justice gained for your dog. I am glad at least that you were with your dog before he died. I’m sorry again for the loss of your dog. Mine died recently and there is always a sense of did I do enough I hope in time you can come to terms with how his life ended and you can remember the happy times

So sorry for your loss Flowers

Agree with PPs that it would be a good idea to gather all information together now while it’s fresh. You might decide to let it go to avoid additional stress but it’s good to have the info in case. Then talk to Rover and council.

Don’t beat yourself up about any of it. The thorn thing could have happened to anyone and easy not to notice so wouldn’t have been a red flag to most people. You did your best by your dog and made the best choices you could.

Hi everyone ! Thank you all for your kind and helpful msg ! The really gave me a bit of strength to get the answers I needed

Got report back from the vet by the looks of things our poor boy had been in kidney failure for a while now (she said I wasn’t to know so should blame myself) it’s in her opinion that regardless if we had the dog at home or not or even if he was at the vets the events that took place would of still happened she said there was no signs of miss treatment she said by the looks of his bloods he had still been up
To date with his insulin , I explained that I was upset the sitter never called and she said that she understood , but she can only assume that he didn’t know how ill the dog was and that he would of just wanted to try and deal with it on his own she did say bringing the dog in sooner wouldn’t of saved him but it would of ment that they would of put him down with us being able to be there as we were hours away , I’m glad we got to be with my boy in his day and moments , I have checked and the sitter has all the proper paper work etc from the council he also has been trained in given dogs meds oral and injected I feel terrible for judging him and I’m glad I never reported him

I am delighted you got closure over your poor dog and the vet was happy he was well cared for over his final days. Also that the sitter had the correct paperwork and they were trained in giving meds. That must help you a lot.

At least now you can let go of the guilt and remember your dog in the way you should.

He should have taken the dog to the vets. Rover are insured for it and you'd told him to. Ours has the same instructions, and I can't imagine her allowing our dog to be ill and not doing anything, she loves her, i wouldn't trust her if she didn't. Definitely report to Rover. So sorry about your dog

Well that's good that your vet was able to put your mind at ease. Still very upsetting & heartbreaking...poor boy.

So sorry about your dog. It must be a weight off your mind that there was nothing to be done, but then you’ve still lost your dog. Hope you can imagine him back with your mum.

I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately diabetes is very much linked to kidney failure in humans so I would assume it could do the same thing to a dog too. I'm glad to hear that your sitter appears to otherwise have well treated him.

I looked after my neighbours cat once and it died. It was attacked by their other neighbors dog, I felt truly awful but sometimes these things happen.

I hope this puts your mind at rest. Again so glad that you were with your dog before he died. He would have known you were there. You sound like a very caring owner. All the best as you remember him
