Box dye. Is twice a month too much to dye

Started dying hair in lockdown as greys were coming through. Never dyed hair before, not needed.
Natural red head but hair colour has faded throughout 30s and now whites/greys are coming through.
Found a good box dye match but by the end of the 3 week there are grey roots and the main body of hair has faded back to limp red of before.
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong.
I'm really not keen to have it professionally done, just because of the expense.

Any ideas

*End of 2nd week even. (By end of 3rd week it's well and truely on its way out)

And also
Am using permanent colour

Unfortunately ginger hair is pretty resistant to box dye so it will wash put/fade faster than other natural natural colours.

However, have you checked that it is a permanent dye and not semi permanent as there is a huge difference in how long they last.

I have been dying my hair for over 25 years at home including bleaching it to light blonde from dark brown so fairly well versed in dyes. Some are far better than others, what brand Di you use?

jellyfrizz · 10/05/2021 21:30

I use a semi permanent every couple of weeks; my roots grow quicker than it can fade.

Might be worth a try as permanent colour really builds up if you are dying it all the time.

Which are good brands?

corneredsofa · 10/05/2021 21:35

I'm using nice and easy, permanent dye at the moment. Haven't tried any others but as open to others if anyone has suggestions.

If your hair is quite light with the greys coming through it can be hard to darken it and keep it dark, it tends to fade.

Have you considered targeting a lighter more strawberry blonde shade where there's a bit less to fade?

mainsfed · 10/05/2021 21:41

Could you try henna? I’m going to try it in a salon for the first time. Much better for your hair.

Magicpaintbrush · 10/05/2021 21:41

The less time you leave between dying your roots the more brittle your hair can become until it can start snapping off an inch or two from your scalp... I speak from experience...so I wouldn't recommend dying it twice a month. Think I saw a root touch up wand on the tv, maybe something like that could tide you over between hair dye applications?

AtoZed · 10/05/2021 21:41

What shampoo are you using? Some will gradually strip out hair dye.

Aprilwasverywet · 10/05/2021 21:43

I usually style my hair up and over at the front to hide the roots for an extra week!
4 weekly dye here!

Terminallysleepdeprived · 10/05/2021 21:43

I find nice and easy isn't great on my hair.

I used to use loreal casting one which was great but as my natural hair is now more grey than colour their preference range is great for grey coverage.

However, I would highly recommend speaking to a trained colourist even if you don't have it dyed in a hairdresser. As I said above ginger hair doesn't dye well at the best of times but they maye be able to recommend a good brand for you

GettingItOutThere · 10/05/2021 22:04

garnier is the best ive ever used, permanent though.

*not a hairdresser!

Schrutesbeets · 10/05/2021 22:08

I know your probably don't want to, but have you considered actually letting yourself go grey?
If you're already fair haired it will probably suit you and its becoming quite the trend now on social media, I think grey hair is beautiful.

LagunaBubbles · 10/05/2021 22:08

I dye my hair about once a month using a shop red, red is one of those colours that seems to fade quicker than others, I like Schwartzkof Live real red and L'Oréal Colirista red.

Hankunamatata · 10/05/2021 22:51

I use Celeb Luxury Viralcolour conditioner in between dyes to keep my colour topped up. They do loads of shades. Pricey but good

WorraLiberty · 10/05/2021 23:02

I use Schwartzkof Live Real Red and my grey roots appear after 3 weeks but the dye itself doesn't fade much.

I cover my grey roots with eyeshadow for a week, so end up dying about every 4.

Livingmybestlifenow · 11/05/2021 00:01

Find your local trade store. L’Oréal inoa is fantastic (pro salon dye) you’ll need the 20 vol 6% developer (big bottle, about £15), and a tube of whichever colour you’re using (about £10 each) which you mix 1:1, if you’re going for a red colour you’ll also want the base colour so for example, a 6, and 6.40 which you mix together. So 25/25/50%. That’ll do you four times and it won’t fade like a box dye.
