To ask if this is some kind of strange scam?

I’m really perplexed.

I do a variety of crafting and post on FB now and then. I did a practise blanket and posted a pic to discuss pitfalls etc. It turned out well but I learned a few lessons so I was pleased. But I said on my post that I now had a blanket I didn’t need so did anyone know where I could donate it?

A lady responded that she collects baby stuff for an orphanage in Africa and she’d love it. Job done. Happy to help. She DMed her address. I chatted briefly and asked if she’d like some other bits and bobs I was going to donate - all very good condition and she said yes.

She’s given me an address that doesn’t exist! I looked at her FB page. She posts a daily request to ‘friends’ to help with donations but she only has 15 friends. No other activity other than the odd inspirational (!) meme.

I don’t understand how this is a scam? Getting people to send stuff to a non existent address? It’s just odd.

I’ve messaged her to ask but I’m reluctant to send it now anyway.

Any thoughts?

I’m also nosy and waiting for the answer Grin

That is just so odd!

@FuriousCheekyFucker 😂 my first thoughts too!

Another vote for new build. At work ideal with changing customer addresses. 90% of the time it doesn't recognise the address its a new build. (The other 10% is usually the last 2 letters of the postcode transposed).

Merryoldgoat · 10/05/2021 20:54

So an entirely un-epic update.

I did a bit more digging.

There is a street with a similar name in the village but the postcode has two different letters

So she gave (obviously fictitious examples follow)

25 Pleasant Street
Happy Village
HV1 6AB

But I found

25 Pleasance Street
Happy Village
HV1 6BC

She came back and said the original was her address and was offended I doubted her. I queried her spelling of street again and she said it was a typo as is the postcode.

I’m still not sure how I feel 🤔

She's offended at you trying to clarify the address when she's getting a free thing from you? CF!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 11/05/2021 09:47

There's someone who posts with no posting history on the crafts section and knit and natter threads on here asking for yarn to knit for hospitals. I'm pretty sure that's a scammer because they also post a link for monetary donations and they never ask for specific weights of wool or types of fibre.

I would guess she'll say it hasn't arrived and would you donate money instead but I'm a cynic...

LBunz · 11/05/2021 12:00

The very fact she’s offended you’ve done something as audacious has clarifying the address would put my hackles up even if she wasn’t a scammer. Rude people don’t deserve generosity. I’d just block her and send the blanket elsewhere.

EmeraldShamrock · 11/05/2021 12:48

Don't send it. It's more hassle than it's worth your intentions are good but you'll end up frustrated.
I'd say she is selling from a stall.

Merryoldgoat · 11/05/2021 19:11

Thank you all. I think I’ll donate elsewhere.

Honestly - I’m not sure if she’s dishonest or a twit. Either way I’m a bit miffed.
