To ask what office skills i need to work after being SAHM for too long

Been a SAHM for 18 years.

Please let's not debate the rights and wrongs of being a SAHM - it wasn't entirely my decision. Life happens and it's led to many years of depression and loss of confidence.

Anyway, I'm late 50s now and need to return to work- for money and my sanity.

Please could you advise what basic office/IT skills are needed for an admin job. The NHS is quite a big employer round here but am happy to take anything.

TIA

Haven't read the full thread but some companies (e.g. BP) do "returnships" for people re-entering the workplace

TuvoknotSpock · 11/05/2021 12:58

I think JPM do them also, they are paid and short term

@Sweak a lot got binned as no experience. They were shocked to receive so many but it’s indicative of the market.

majesticallyawkward · 11/05/2021 13:48

@Sweak there is cv sifting software that most companies/recruiters use so there isn't someone manually looking at 800 applicants. It's pretty brutal as someone might be perfect the vacancy but if their cv isn't formatted to what the software is looking for or uses different phrases and keywords it'll be passed over.
It's not unusual to have hundreds or even over 1000 applicants for a vacancy in less specialised roles.

@MrsColinRobinson

Have you considered becoming a doctor's receptionist? You won't need much additional training Hmm

@Dustyhedge the experience of a SAHM at PTA’s etc is the same of a ‘newly-minted’ graduate who has done lots of clubs and volunteering.

While someone who’s just older but went straight from a degree to a SAHM without any ‘extra-curriculars’ is unlikely to be able to compete with any of the above

Sign up to whatever the most recent version of ECDL is at some sort of adult learning provider. When you have this qualification sign up to various temp agencies and take any kind of vaguely office type work even if just a few days work here and there. Then put that experience on your CV and start applying for jobs. You won't get anywhere without any recent office experience, although I don't know where you live so could be wrong. The key is to get some recent working experience.
