To think hygiene standards are low in Britain?

This obviously does not apply to everyone. But in Britain, I think there is a general acceptance of fairly low hygiene standards. I see it in several areas.
With individuals you have people telling everyone they do not wash bras for months, do not clean their teeth every day, do not wash face masks every day.
In public areas, offices and shops the cleaning often consist of no more than a quick hoover occasionally, a mop and a bit of damp wiping. Apart from toilets, places are rarely properly cleaned.
I think most people simply do not realise how unhygienic Britain is until they go to countries that do have a good standard of hygiene. There seems to be a lot of emphasis in Britain on superficial things that make places look good such as scatter cushions or make-up, and not on basic hygiene and cleanliness.

@NursePye is that your way of telling me to get out of your country?

The country is grim in terms of hygiene but it is where I choose to live and I have every right to point out the poor hygiene. Do take your go back where you come from mentality and take a shower or bath.
@TheCountessofFitzdotterel without covering their mouths. Did you miss that part? Do you think it is acceptable and hygienic to yawn, sneeze, cough without covering your mouth?
I can’t see a problem with yawning with an uncovered mouth - or at least not from a hygiene viewpoint.

It isn't 'grim' at all

winniestone37 · 11/05/2021 18:09

How can you possibly know this? You e based it a very few percentage of people and drawn ridiculous conclusions.

DeeleysMum · 11/05/2021 18:11

Well, after all of the soap disappearing off the shelves during lockdown part uno, it's made me wonder what all of the dirty gits were using before hand!

I run a cleaning business so in some instances I have to agree about general cleanliness and hygiene.

When I moved to the UK for the first couple of years I caught every cold, cough, and flu going. I went to the GP thinking something must be wrong with my immune system. He cheerfully told me that, per capita, the UK has the lowest rate of hand washing even after going to the toilet, as well as other lower standards of hygiene so he wasn't surprised that I was getting sicker than I was in my birth country (not a European country, just for reference!) as I would be coming into contact with a hell of a lot more germs than I was used to.

It’s not very pretty to yawn without covering your mouth and it’s certainly bad manners but you will have to explain why you think it’s unhygienic.

Not picking up dog poo or hanging the bag of dog poo on tree branches. Why? Smelly breath in the mornings because tongues are not brushed.

I generally do not accept drinks or food from British homes.

I wouldn't want to offer you anything from my home anyway. I only like nice people
Bebethany · 11/05/2021 18:15

How odd? My experience of Budapest was completely different? I went there for dental implants and was blown away by how clean everywhere was? Then I had a Hungarian lodger and in conversation she said that many still remember the days when to throw a cigarette butt on the ground would result in intervention by a soldier with a gun! So that’s why the streets were clean! But for my money of clean streets, try Chelsea or Split in Croatia

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/05/2021 18:15

Jeez, not another thread about how awful the U.K. is for this or that reason.

Some MNers really do need to get out more, and find something genuine to complain about.

Dwrcegin · 11/05/2021 18:16

You are correct. Only just started reading the thread.

One of my jobs is (non-domestic) cleaning. Even with covid, hygiene is still shockingly low.

Coolandclamy · 11/05/2021 18:17

Just as talking sends tiny particles in the air so does yawning, especially during the finally stage where people do the final big exhale through their mouths, pushing out droplets and tiny particles.

What an odd remark. Why wouldn’t you accept food or drink from British homes? I take it you aren’t from the UK?
Neilyweily · 11/05/2021 18:19

You seem to be missing the point of an ecosystem.

All these Dettol adverts that say there is more bacteria on your chopping board than your toilet...

Yes there obviously is and we have been fine for millions of years and continue to be absolutely fine.

Your face is crawling with mites and bacteria, your gut could not exist without bacteria, bloody hell they sell yoghurt specifically designed to tell you that it will fix your gut bacteria because we have become a sanitised target for any pathogen.

yellowmuma · 11/05/2021 18:19

I for one thoroughly clean my home weekly, and my personal hygiene is fine.

Tarring every person in the UK with the same brush based on some random statistic isn’t cool, not everyone is unhygienic 😬

I see. So panting, singing and shouting would also be unhygienic. You’re starting to sound irrational.

I don’t imagine you get offered much.

Supergirl1958 · 11/05/2021 18:24

YABVU and judgemental!!

Coolandclamy · 11/05/2021 18:25

Panting and shouting in people’s faces are unhygienic. But you are doing the classic - you asked why yawning is unhygienic and I’ve told you. It is not only unmannerly it is unhygienic in public spaces. You want to move on to panting, signing, etc. Sure. Knock yourself out in listing all the activities we do with our mouths. Point is, yawning without covering your mouth in public is both unseemly and unhygienic.

Blossomtoes · 11/05/2021 18:27

It’s not attractive but it has zero hygiene implications.

Coolandclamy · 11/05/2021 18:27

I personally don’t care whether I am offered or not offered. I don’t want any drinks or food. The offering or not offering is beside the point. In fact I’d be happier not to be offered.

Coolandclamy · 11/05/2021 18:27

@Blossomtoes if you say so. I say otherwise.Smile

You wouldn't be. I doubt people would want you in their space for long periods
sarralim · 11/05/2021 18:28

@YellowScallion

The only major hygiene difference I've observed between countries is that in the Nordic countries they're very big on showering naked and washing before going in a public swimming pool. It's the only thing I've noticed that's universal.
So much this. That's what I've observed too. I'm against the trend of overshowering; it's basically a modern phenomenon and something only the western world can indulge in - it's not good for either our skin or the environment. However. I'm bit surprised when I hear that my son in (state) secondary school just don't have the facilities to shower after PE - or that my primary school child has left their (school) swimming lessons without a shower either before or after swimming - ''because there wasn't any time, Mummy''. When I grew up in Scandinavia, this was completely unheard of.
