That I buy brand names for myself but not my kids yet…

Ive posted before about cutting way back on spending and it’s got me thinking about the ins and outs of my spending habits and attitude to money. I’ve a good few designer coats and shoes that I invested in and they’ve lasted me years. And some stuff if I no longer use it (Louboutins) I have been able to sell. A lot of it has saved me money long term, I havent needed to buy a new coat or jeans or boots for at least five years! I’ve had people ask why I invest in designer items for myself, but generally stick to Next and M&S for my kids. A lot of my friends do the opposite, they have a whole bunch of designer shoes and clothes for their kids but don’t buy these things for themselves. My reasons are this : my boys have no interest, brand names mean nothing to them, they are too young to understand value of expensive things and won’t look after them, they will outgrow them so it’s not like they can wear them for years and years to come and also, there will likely come a time when they are older when they actually want to have certain brands so I am making the most of the time where they have no interest. Of course they have everything they need, but I would rather spend money on them on a toy/day out than for example a piece of clothing they don’t care about. Even when they are older if they want an expensive brand item I will get it for them only if it is something will last years and get good use of, I’d be reluctant if it was a trend which would soon be forgotten about and discarded. Is this an unreasonable attitude?

I don’t have anything designer and neither do my kids

I think your attitude is spot on. You invest in key pieces, and your kids couldn’t care less. I don’t have much designer stuff (only handbags via eBay!) but I certainly won’t be buying them anything fancy until they can look after it (and earn the money to pay for it themselves).

Of course kids don’t need designer labels and, in my view, it looks like you are trying too hard and is also a bit naff to have your kids in Gucci or whatever. Nobody cares about such things. As an adult, if such things bring you pleasure, that’s up to you.

Of course not - your DC are still growing. If I buy myself a coat or nice dress I might still be wearing it in 10/15 years (M&S budget more than designer) my DC last about 6m before they outgrow their clothes.

I do buy DS1 nice coats though so they can be passed down to DS2 but normal clothes like jeans and tops are just from the supermarket because they are just going to get muddy/torn at the park.

I don't see any worth in a designers name but I do go by quality and would spend more on something for myself than for my children who will grow it of it (unless I was buying it for my eldest who would then pass it down in which case it would be a worthy investment)

No point buying expensive stuff for kids they don't appreciate and are going to grow out of before they wear out.

Camomila I do this too with my boys, I tend to spend more on key pieces like winter coat or boots for my eldest knowing his younger brother will get it, and even though I don’t care what brand it is I do ensure it’s good enough quality to be in good condition for when it’s passed down
