How to phrase it...

I work as a contractor, I'm not unhappy, but applied for a permanent job in a different company a while ago (had nothing to lose and permanent is more secure than contract), I didn't get it but I was the 'first runner up'. I hadn't told anyone from my current work that I was applying so you can imagine my surprise when a team mate knew all about my application from chatting to someone else in my company. Somehow a student in my company knows what I applied for and how I did in my interview etc and apparently can't keep their mouth shut either. It was a bit awkward and while I'm not raging I do feel a bit uncomfortable with the lack of discretion, I'm not sure there's any privacy legislation preventing this company from discussing applications but I don't think it's great to do that, especially with a student. I also don't really want that information reaching senior management through gossip and them getting the wrong idea and thinking I'm don't want to be there!

Fast forward a few weeks and my current company has extended my contract and the other company has contacted me asking if I'd be interested in a new position they have coming up without giving any actual details of the position.

On one hand I am of course interested to hear what they'd offer but on the other hand I am really put off by the lack of discretion and don't particularly want a repeat of last time but have no idea how to say that to them without sounding like a nob.

AIBU to be a bit put off by it? Also how or even would you address it when responding to them about another opportunity?

Wow. That's very conflicting. Could you discuss with this student how on earth they know what should be quite confidential.

Tell me about it. From what I have been able to ascertain is that this student did a placement at the other company and knows some of the people who work there who have shared the information with them. I haven't approached the student as they have a reputation for being difficult and I don't want it to turn it into a drama and I've observed (from afar) some unusual behaviour from them in the past. :/

I would say

"Thank you for getting in touch and I am very interested in the details of this further opportunity. Would you be able to provide assurance that on this occasion any application will be treated as confidential as unfortunately I am aware that my previous application was discussed and shared with my current employer. Whilst this has not caused any issues and I am sure is not your usual practice I would appreciate confirmation of the confidentiality of our discussion".
