I have a hairdressers appointment Tuesday but I'm ill. WWYD

I have an appointment to have my terrible hair done on Tuesday, I haven't stepped foot in a hair dressers for two years. Depression mainly. OH kindly offered to pay for it. I was excited.

I've woken up this morning and my throat is so, so sore. I've lost my voice and I'm very wheezy.

I take regular rapid covid tests and I'm very sure it's not that, ive already had it - but I can't see the salon being comfortable with me going there ill. Even though you do have to wear masks.

If I cancel at such short notice they're going to charge my card for the missed appointment, terms and conditions. I can do without dropping £50 for nothing.

The timing couldn't be worse. I'm probably not going to sound normal by Tuesday, these things drag for me.

WWYD?

If you're still ill on Tuesday there's no way you can go. The staff don't need whatever you've got any more than you do.

Will they charge if you reschedule rather than cancel? My salon doesn't. You could reschedule to next week when you're better.

I'm torn between phoning up tomorrow, pleading my case and trying to rearrange without being charged for the missed appointment - or taking it on the chin and losing the £50.

It's only Sunday. Most places say to give 24 hours notice.

I could ask, the problem is I can't actually talk atm. My voice is completely gone.

I'd phone the salon, explain the situation and ask if it's possible to move the appointment and keep the deposit. If it's not, sorry, but you have to cancel. You don't know for sure that it's not Covid, and anyway, it's not really fair to risk infecting salon staff with something else. I'm sorry, it really does suck but I think you know what you should do

No way they should charge you for genuine illness, just ring them and explain. The charge is usually for no shows. Otherwise anyone with covid symptoms would turn up anyway and lie

What do the T&Cs say about cancellations? Most allow you to reschedule if you're ill. I'd be inclined to give them a call and say you're still happy to come in, but you're quite poorly and don't know how contagious you are/what you have. I'd imagine most places would transfer your booking free of charge.

Can your OH call for you?

Your Oh can make the call for you if you have no voice

Ring up Monday morning and explain. There’s no way you can turn up and risk passing it on. It will be fine.

A lot of places have Covid cancellation policies at the moment, as they’d rather you cancel than come in possibly ill.

Do they have a Covid policy published on their website or social media?

£50 for cancelling !
Thats harsh. They will be able to fill your slot especially at the moment.
You have now made me wonder what my hairdresser would charge me if I ever had to cancel . I have been going for over 10 years but would not go back if they charged me that much ( I would expect to pay some penalty but not that much).
You have a dilemma, if you do a test and it’s not Covid then it’s up to you.

I definitely wouldn't just turn up, my predicament was whether to try and rearrange or just accept I've lost my deposit.

When I booked the calender was practically full so I'm not sure what if anything is available.

I had a voicemail from the salon yesterday asking me to call up and confirm I'm attending, she quoted the need to do so otherwise risk losing the deposit for not attending. I called and confirmed as sods law would have it I was fine yesterday.

I'm going to look up the exact T&C's now.

OH could call for me great idea!

Should have added, If you can rearrange that would be best.

I have a feeling it's strep throat.

I'm going to struggle to get a full covid test by tomorrow but do have the rapid result ones at home, not sure that would suffice though.

Whatever it is i don't want to pass it on to anybody, it's bloody horrible.

Definitely call. I recently had a last minute change of plan, called the salon out of courtesy (less than 90mins before the appointment) to let them know I wouldn’t be coming- and they let me reschedule for 2 days later, no problem! Worth a shot.

If they have a Facebook page message them via that as they may pick it up before they're open and it will give them a bit more notice to find someone else to fill the slot.

Obviously still phone when they open in case they don't pick up the message.

Personally, I would leave it a bit longer before cancelling. I had some kind of 24 hour thing earlier this week - horrendous sore throat, croaky, groggy. I felt absolutely ghastly. I took a lateral flow test as a precaution which I knew would be negative.

24 hours later I was fine again. Just some 24 hour bug.

Can you stay in bed and rest all today? I would see how you feel tomorrow morning, to be honest.

T&C's say I can amend my appointment up to 24 hours before I'm due to attend. PHEW! Will get OH to ring first thing tomorrow.

No availability in the diary for the next week unfortunately, but whats another 1-2 weeks when you've already waited 2 years Grin

I could see how I am in the morning. My appointment is Tuesday at 12.30.

I'll take a rapid test today just to be on the safe side as I have nursery to contend with too.

You might be fine by then.
Best thing to do if not better is call first thing tomorrow- I’d be surprised if they didn’t let you move the appointment tbh. My salon puts messages out on Facebook when they have cancellations and they generally get cancellation shots filled up quickly.

Also as long as you have no health conditions or other medications that would prevent you from doing it, it's worth trying an anti-histamine. Everyone in my house is really suffering from hay fever the last couple of days. Sore throat, blocked nose, tired and achy, Benadryl has helped. Speaking to some friends they're suffering over the last few days too so I don't know if the recent rain and windy conditions have stirred up loads of pollen or what but anecdotally it seems to be a bad weekend for hay fever.

I'm a hairdresser.... at the moment I'm not enforcing my cancellation fee if it's due to illness.
