To think that tesco are idiots for changing theplastic bags

has any one else noticed that tesco have made their plastic bags even thinner. i know that they have an effect on the environment but they must realise that by making them thinner we have to double them up just to ensure that they dont split due to the sharp plastic packaging they instist on wrapping thier products in.
i would reuse these bags if they was not useless as soon as i had got them home.

I do - seems pointless.

If they want to go eco-friendly, why not make paper bags from a sustainable forrest?! It really isn't rocket science, is it!

catsmother · 15/11/2007 09:36

Do you mean the free bags or the "bags for life" ??

I agree the thin free bags are pretty useless ..... they are probably working on the theory that people will get fed up using them and swap to a reusable bag instead.

What really annoyed me though is that they've also recently changed the design of the so called bags for life. They used to have a side gusset (don't know if that's the right word but I'm sure you know what I mean) which meant they'd expand and you could fit loads more in ... now they don't, so you have to buy more ??? of those "green" bags to get your shopping in ?!? In fact, it's really p*d me off because anything like a box of cereal and the stupid bag is practically filled up.

I've started using the big square black canvas bags they sell instead. Think they're 70p each ..... now they do expand really well and you can get loads in.

Lulumama · 15/11/2007 09:37

i take my plastic bags to be recycled and try to use fabric and canvas bags or just put stuff in the buggy.....if you find the bags are too thin, buy bags for life or use other reusable bags

MrsTweedy · 15/11/2007 09:43

They should stop giving out bags altogether, like they do in France.

Peachy · 15/11/2007 09:46

Honestly? I think YABU by using the palstic bags. We've switched to using cheap biodegradable hemp bags (sainsburys Organic ones) and its so much easier than carryinga round a load of different carriers. We also recycle any which doa rrive eg. via school or CM.

carriers are bad, they need banning.

Piggy · 15/11/2007 09:48

Personally I think Tesco (and the rest) could do a whole lot more to cut down on their packaging. We'd need less bags (plastic or otherwise) to put the shopping in if there wasn't so much packaging.

pud1 · 15/11/2007 09:52

but the fact is that they do have the bags and by just making them thinner it is an empty gesture that is also counter productive ( all this tree hugging bollocks that politicians and large companies pretent to give a fuck about just to get the public on side)
i certainly agree with piggy about the packaging

OP posts:
Peachy · 15/11/2007 09:58

That's the ting though- if you think its 'tree hugging bollocks' you're going to double up on the carier bags; if you want to actually make a sustainable difference you'll get reusables.

personally I am pleased tesco is doing something to make carrier bags less desirable, whatever their actual motives.

pud1 · 15/11/2007 10:05

do think its all bollocks. the real issues are never going to be resolved like increased packaging if all that is happening is token gestures.

Why can't supermarkets get rid of plastic bags like they have in France - what is their problem?

I find tesco to be the root of all evil, well maybe not, but it seems to make people angry! The parking, the bags, the way they keep changing the layout so that streesed out shoppers can't find what they want and end up buying things they didnt go in for.
It's not very often anyone complains about sainsburys or morrisons.
I think it's time to boycott tesco!

pud1 · 15/11/2007 10:18

that my point nimnom. they would not do something as contraversial as getting rid of them as they dont really care enough to want to upset the amount of customers that want to use the bags regardless of the effect they have. in stead they just make them thinner even though this means that people will use twice as much making a bigger impact on the environment. this is what i mean about tree hugging bollocks. its all for show

Lazarou,
I've already done it. I don't shop in tesco at all - they're taking over the world and whilst I'm all in favour of businesses doing well, i don't like the way Tesco go about things. So I've voted with my feet.

worzsel · 15/11/2007 12:32

they should just make them biodegradable like co-op.

I use( when i remember to get the out of the car ) my ladybird bags, they are awesome !

ruddynorah · 15/11/2007 12:37

i do 'naked' shopping online so no bags. but then the odd time i do go to the supermarket, or normal market, or high street or whatever i take 2 big canvas shopping bags i got from a supermarket in france (their 'bags for life basically, as no plastic carriers there). they are fantastic, expandable, easily fit in a decent shop, and no blimmin plastic bags to faff with.

Lazarou · 15/11/2007 12:40

It was the nearest supermarket to us without having to drive into town, but they are currently revamping the co-op at the end of the road so i will go there instead.
I agree that tesco seems to be taking over, and creating angry shoppers. They even make their car park really complicated so that people start getting stressed before they've even parked!

larry5 · 15/11/2007 16:01

Tesco thin carrier bags do bio-degrade as I found out to my cost. Dd had put some of her bits in one to store in her bedroom. Sometime later when she went to get the bag out it was in little flakes and there was a great deal of mess to sort out.
