. . . or is this a terrible finish?

We've just had our double glazing replaced. The photos below are one example of how badly the windows have been finished. They look worse than the old ones Sad

AIBU in asking him to come back and improve the finish? He's already not happy with me because he didn't take a rollerblind down and installed the window and beading around it, which meant there would be a chunk of beading missing when we replaced the visibly-old and crappy blind. He's also massively damaged the paintwork around the windows - much more than I expected.

It's also really awkward because he's a friend of DH's . . . ugh. That was probably our first mistake . . .

Is this normal? I honestly expected them to look nice and clean and new Sad

They don't look like new windows to me

Stuckhere2021 · 07/05/2021 19:38

@Jubaju

I’d be fuming, they look like the before shot of a reveal!

As for how much he's charging, it's not substantially less than local firms - maybe 10%. We weren't doing it to save money, though, we had recommendations from the local Facebook group.

Having said that, I now think that quite often people just recommend their friends and family rather than because they've actually used the service and thought it was good!

That is not right. We had some issues with out window fitters but it was 99% better than yours Shock.

Confusedandshaken · 07/05/2021 19:41

When we had DG fitted there was no touching up or making good needed. The window surrounds and reverts looked as good when they had finished as they did when they started. I would not be happy with this.

RainbowBriteUk · 07/05/2021 19:47

Please complain OP. Those holes are shocking!!!

MintMatchmaker · 07/05/2021 19:52

I agree they don’t look like new windows. When we had ours done we had some very minor touching up to do but nothing else.

That sealant is awful and the holes look as though they’re from a previously fitted blind.

Fromneverland · 07/05/2021 19:53

I thought these were old window pics
They aren’t new windows no chance. He’s made a total arse if it too

Don’t pay . And the holes?! Dafuq!

andivfmakes3 · 07/05/2021 20:00

Looks like he's used a second hand window - or maybe an ex display one? there is absolutely no reason to drill a new window frame like that

As for making good around the frames - no that wouldn't be down for him to do but the sealant should at least be done properly

Clymene · 07/05/2021 20:05

That's terrible. I've just had new windows fitted and will have to do a bit of decorating but not much.

That's shocking, I wouldn't want to pay him a penny.

Lipz · 07/05/2021 20:10

😲😲😲😲😲 Such a bad job. Sealant is very lumpy, not properly smoothed. The frames are not new, when I zoom in I can see lots of dents and marks. As for the holes 😲😲 WTAF... I would not hesitate contacting him, it's really bad.

eurochick · 07/05/2021 20:11

The holes look like a blind or something has been there before. Were the windows supposed to be new?

Mellonsprite · 07/05/2021 20:17

It’s awful I’m afraid. We’ve had new windows and the sealant was neat and smooth.
No holes were drilled in the windows, there also looks like black staining on the joins of the plastic. I don’t think those windows are new either ☹️

SirGawain · 07/05/2021 20:17

@YawnyOwl

Um.. just paint over the sealant?! He's a window fitter, not a decorator, what do you want him to do?!
We have had several sets of windows over the years using several firms and we have never had a job a shoddy looking as that. Yes it needs painting and that's down to the OP but the sealant should be smooth and neat. Bearing in mind the probable cost YawnyOwl seems easily satisfied.
Itsokthanks · 07/05/2021 20:24

Are they recycled windows? It's standard to need to decorate after windows have been fitted but I'd not be happy with that job.

BruceAndNosh · 07/05/2021 20:25

The damage to surround really depends on how easy it is to remove the old windows.
BUT he should leave a clean tidy edge. Then you may have to repaint.

No way should new windows have holes in them plus the corners of the windows look really tatty

BruceAndNosh · 07/05/2021 20:32

He's also left sealant on the face of the frames

Harefield · 07/05/2021 20:37

The holes in the corners looks like the holes in the corners of my old windows from where the previous homeowner screwed in those little hooks to hang a net wire from. They look second hand. When my new windows were fitted they were pristine.

AntiSocialDistancer · 07/05/2021 20:43

He's used second hand windows! Shock

GlazingNightmare · 07/05/2021 20:45

There was never a mention of recycled windows, and I would have wanted to know more about what exactly that meant before I agreed to them.

I feel really sad. This was supposed to be a significant improvement to the house; instead I feel like we've just ended up with a bodge job.

I also really hate confrontation and I'm dreading having to have the conversation with him. Would it be hard to fix ourselves? I'm thinking we find out how to remove sealant and then replace it, make it smooth etc. I think I'd rather do that . . . I don't trust him now anyway!

doublehalo · 07/05/2021 20:49

Those windows have mould and the holes are for net curtain wires.

In fact none of that work looks new.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/05/2021 20:50

He also needs to provide a Fensa certificate, I think it is a legal requirement after April 2002, or you may have issues when you move.

GlazingNightmare · 07/05/2021 20:52

I've asked for FENSA certificates, he says he does them quarterly so I'll get them in the next couple of months as he just did a batch . . . does that sound right?

Start off asking him what the holes are and take it from there? There’s no need to be confrontational, but surely you should get what you’ve paid for ?
