To ask if anyone else constantly has music running in their head?

I have music running constantly in my head all the time for as long as I can remember. It's normally there in the background like a low barely noticeable hum, but sometimes it becomes louder and more fucking annoying apparent. It's there regardless of what I'm doing, whether I'm watching tv, having a conversation, working, and the only time I can't (mentally) hear it is when I'm meditating or actually listening to music in real life.

Song changes are triggered by things I see, or words/phrases that I read or hear, and the music can be anything from songs I love, to songs I hate, to annoying jingles, to random instrumental music. One particular tune that gets stuck in my head regularly is the song that a toy telephone belonging to a girl I babysat 20 years ago used to play Hmm

I don't suffer from anxiety or any other mental health condition, and have no history of adhd or anything like that. But still the music persists. It doesn't bother me too much on a day-to-day basis but sometimes the songs turn into earworms and become infuriating. I never really paid much attention to it before, but read someone asking a similar question on another forum a while back and realised that it actually doesn't happen to everyone, and I've been very conscious of it since.

Is there any way of stopping it??

I do. I don't always pay attention to it, but if someone to ask what's playing at any particular time I would listen in and be able to tell them.

I dont have it constantly but almost always have a tune in my head.
I'll also start singing it out loud absolutely baffled where its come from as there doesnt seem to be any connection with what I'm doing to the song. I just thought I was a person who likes to sing even though I sound like a cat being strangled

It’s constant for me. It’s like a radio station. I’ve woken up in the night and it just plays . Drives me bonkers

Yes nearly all the time, I thought it was normal! Currently have 'Don't fear the reaper' going round and round!

My internal jukebox is always on the go. Sometimes it keeps me awake at night. The other night it was stuck on Omen by the Prodigy, which is about as far from a lullaby as you can get. No way was I sleeping through that.
I didn’t know that wasn’t normal.

I had the theme tune to “I Dream of Genie” on a permanent loop for most of the 90s. Oddly I didn’t find it annoying.

Sorry, that should be “I dream of Jeannie”. I had to google...

@take2bottlesintotheshower > The trouble with the Kylie song is that, with the latest advert that's using it which features a dancing frog, I picture the frog as my greyhound, if he could dance. But that song hasn't particularly lodged itself in my head.

The current song for me is Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. Like some others on here, a specific song usually persists for around two weeks. When it started happening to me I thought that my mind persistently focusing on one song when I was wide awake at night, thinking anxious thoughts, would distract me and allow me to fall asleep. Not so: apparently I can completely focus on the song lyrics whilst also having the anxious thoughts. I can't turn the song off until I finally fall asleep. What makes it even more irritating is they're never songs that I actually like - so, so annoying.

I have this a lot but not all the time. Like a couple of pp's it comes and goes and is usually driven by anxiety or worry. It can last for weeks though. When I was a child my sister told me I sang in my sleep and sometimes spliced more than one song together! I currently have Nick Kamen singing 'Each Time You Break My Heart', after hearing about his death yesterday. I don't know much of it, so it's more or less the same section of song over and over! When I see the title of a song, I automatically sing it in my head.

I wouldn't say constantly, but yes, often. Right now it's (don't know it's real name, I think its a military brass band march by Sousa), you know that footie chant "here we go, here we go, here we go". No idea how that one popped into my head.

Can you actually hear it? When I have a song stuck in head it’s my inner monologue thinking it

Yes, I always have a song playing. It often gets stuck on a loop and I don't notice it. I can switch it like choosing a new song on my ipod. Or I hear a familiar song and it replaces the one in my head.

Right now it is Hooked on a Feeling.

Yes, but it's not often loud enough or annoying enough to be really intrusive- I have to bring that thought stream to the surface. There are times when it's not the case though - I remember when I had Hit me baby one more time very prominent, and it felt like it went on for days.

Currently it's Love Hurts - not sure where I picked that one up from. And earlier today, I had Freddie Mercury singing Love me like there's no tomorrow. Occasionally it goes classical. I quite liked it when I had Smetana's Ma Vlast.

Yes pretty much always and always have.

I think brains are very little understood and the supposed standard ways they work are likely to be way too narrow.

EG they used to think synatheasthia was an aberration. Now they think all babies have all senses available and linked and learn to disconnect them.

I have aphantasia which I only learned about on here! I think it's 20% of people have it. Also on here I learnt that people are very swift to react to difference/ things they don't understand. On an aphantasia thread there were loads of posters saying. People with this must be autistic, have no imagination, be less intelligent, they are missing something massive in their lives...

Anyway. Yes music pretty much all the time. Full on stereophonic surround sound. And when I hear music I can feel it through my body, in my fingers, I can't help but move. I like it tbh. Also might explain why I still go to festivals clubs gigs at nearly 50!

And it never annoys me.

I really struggled to understand what earworm meant when people started saying it!

I always have music playing in my head too. I can push it into the background when I'm thinking of other things, but it's always on. Currently it's the piece my DD is learning on the piano, but it changes every so often like a jukebox in my head.

DD and DSis have ADHD, but I think I'm neurotypical.

Yes, have songs in my head all the time. Wake up to go to the loo at night and there's a song playing. Have been frustrated in the car when the same song has been playing for 10mins or so - then realise it's in my head and I haven't turned the radio on...

Always. Currently Goodbye yellow brick Road, and can be triggered by a word which sets off an association loop. My husband doesn't. How boring!
