To ask what books your 12 - 13 year old boys enjoy reading?

My sons reading is a bit below where it should be so the teacher has asked that he reads a bit more frequently. Teacher just said anything he enjoys is good. He / we have read most David Walliams / Roald Dahl / David baddiel type books. He does t like Harry potter. Any other suggestions?

I’ve looked at Waterstones as I’m sure they used to have a best seller list for kids books in age order but can’t find anything like that now.

I have a reluctant yr 8 reader, he has recently got into Special Forces Cadets by Chris Ryan and is on his 6th book, so they must be good!

My 12yo ds has recently discovered mystery books set on trains. There are 3 so far and he loves them! This is the first one.

Hi, my boys really enjoyed Anthony Horowitz books at 11/12. Also skull duggery.

Stellaroses · 06/05/2021 21:51

What's he into?
Mine loved Anthony Horowitz esp Alex Rider.

AcheyRibs · 06/05/2021 21:52

The Numbers trilogy

rabbitheadlights · 06/05/2021 21:53

Tom gates

Whaleandsnail6 · 06/05/2021 21:53

My 11 year old loves the Percy Jackson and Skullduggery pleasant series's.

FenceSplinters · 06/05/2021 21:55

The Cherub series of books were a big hit with my son. He started them in year seven, when he was 12.

milkytwilight · 06/05/2021 21:57

At that age I loved Darren Shan.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 06/05/2021 21:58

Thanks all. I will get googling those suggestions. He is into football, gaming and quite enjoys a funny book. He just needs to find something that captures his interest.

My son loved Anthony Horowitz , skullduggery and Alex rider and also Eoin Colfer Artemis Fowl books

Eightiesfan · 06/05/2021 21:58

I know a lot of people are not keen on DW but his books get kids reading, so that can only be a good thing. If you want to move away from them I’d recommend the following books:

Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy
Anything by Gordon Korman - make sure they are for children as he has also written some YA which wouldn’t be suitable
Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
Murder most unladylike series by Robin Stevens - don’t let the title put you off, I work in a boys school and KS3 love them.
The Extinction Trials by SM Wilson
Anything by Kim Slater esp. The boy who lied
Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz
Burger Wuss by MT Anderson

Feelingbad2 · 06/05/2021 22:03

Percy Jackson

Eightiesfan · 06/05/2021 22:06

Just a comment on the Cherub series, they start off suitable for age, but they very quickly mature and by book 6 or 7 the books contain a lot of violence, sex, drug use, prostitution etc.

Woodlandbelle · 06/05/2021 22:06

Dermot O Leary is quite popular here.

Summerdayshaze · 06/05/2021 22:12

Following with interest.

There's some great suggestions above. Why not try the library first? Some have reopened and most offer a click n collect service. Staff will choose books for you if you let them know your preferences. If your son doesn't enjoy certain authors, you haven't wasted your money buying new books

toucantoucaninatree · 06/05/2021 22:52

My 11yo has recently read and enjoyed Maze Runner, Hunger Games, and Cirque de Freak by Darren Shan.

sorryiasked · 06/05/2021 22:54

goodreads is a useful website as there are suggested titles and you can see what other books readers have enjoyed.

AMCoffeePMWine · 06/05/2021 22:57

My boys love anything by Dav Pilkey, like Captain Underpants.

Author Jeff Kinney is similarly funny, Diary of a Wimpy kid series and more. Great for laughs and middle school angst, plus potty jokes!

WellTidy · 06/05/2021 23:01

Anything by Michael Morpurgo (DS likes his animals books), Anthony Horowitz - Alex Rider series, anything by Omali J Rauf, anything by Katherine Rundell, the skullduggery pleasant series by Derek Landy, anything by Louis Sachar, anything by Patrick Ness, a book called Dragon Mountain too.

Ds is asleep and his books are in his room - there will be lots of others. Let me know if you want more ideas and I will look tomorrow.

DS is obsessed with these! He’s nearly finished book 6 and is gutted so he’s going to try some of the adult ones.
VestaTilley · 06/05/2021 23:05

The Narnia Chronicles are good. And My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell (hilarious), and the full length James Herriot books (also often very funny in places).

MrsWooster · 06/05/2021 23:08

Bear Grylls’ ´Beck Granger’ books are great.
