To cheat on M&S and lose my Waitrose virginity?

lighthearted thread 😊

I usually do my food shopping at M&S (well about 80% of it- I do occasionally go to other stores for branded essentials etc that are not available there) We have 2 M&S food halls close by, no Waitrose in our town but one in the neighboring town around 25 minute drive away.

I’m currently on maternity leave and have the luxury of time for shopping etc and I like to do a leisurely food shop on a Friday morning.

It occurred to me today that I have never tried or been to Waitrose! Probably because before mat leave I was working full time and it’s not local or convenient, but technically tomorrow I could drive the extra miles into the next town and lose my Waitrose virginity! I was initially quite excited by this prospect (I know I’m sad I don’t get out much 😂), but is it actually worth the extra effort to drive there when there’s my trusty M&S here?

YABU- waitrose isn’t worth the effort, stick with M&S

YANBU- it is well worth the trip out to Waitrose

There are products I like from both but as someone very familiar with Waitrose, I find myself not having bothered to drive there for ages as there’s an M&S closer to me!

That said it would be fun to explore a new supermarket so could be a good way to spend a Friday Grin

Both M&S and Waitrose are good choices as usually a cut above the others bar independent boutique foodie establishments. I do both and pick and choose accordingly. They are both good for cupboard staples and something more aspirational for a change from dinning out. Much appreciated in recent lockdowns. Enjoy!

Yes, go to Waitrose. Once DC is here, you probably won't get the opportunity for a long, leisurely browse on your own for years. Make the most of the time you have!

We used to find waitrose actually cheaper on the essentials and more variety on the treats. M&S better at ready meals but we cook fro scratch so definitely try waitrose

Thanks for the encouragement, I’m going to get up and give it a try in the morning. It will be the farthest I’ve travelled and probably the most exciting place I’ve visited since pre- pandemic!

I don't shop there regularly, but Waitrose is very nice and doesn't have to cost much more than usual.

Only thing I don't like is the watery cottage cheese.

YANBU. Going to Waitrose and having a really good look at what they sell is an excellent way to pass the time.

I don't shop there that often, but I do need to go every so often because I like certain things from there so go a handful of times a year to stock up. If you get a My Waitrose card, you can get a free newspaper if you spend £10 and if you don't shop there routinely, they send you money off vouchers when you spend a certain amount.

I like their own brand tonic in cans and as I have run out, I'll probably go again soon to stock up.

Oh and I cheat on all the supermarkets, I'm polysupermarket.

The main downside for me from WFH is that I used to pass just about all of them on the way home from work and I'd go in whichever one I fancied a couple of times a week but now it's a special trip out so I'm mainly sticking to Morrisons, Asda and m&s, so it feels like a trek to go anywhere else. But I can usually engineer a trip to Waitrose or Lidl at the weekend on the way back from a walk or whatever and they're building an Aldi near the local Morrisons, so it's all good.

Hope you enjoy it OP.

I love waitrose and sometimes go there for a treat (am also sadSmile). Well, we have had to find our own fun during the pandemic!

Needsleep32 · 08/05/2021 07:00

I personally think Waitrose is pretty rubbish compared to M&S.

pomacentrus · 08/05/2021 08:01

Waitrose has loads of yummy things.

I liked this thread in January about other peoples Waitrose favourites - I've enjoyed trying some things I never would have picked off the shelf myself. Ok not brave enough to try the tinned haggis!
