Patting pregnant belly when asleep

Lou265 · 06/05/2021 20:25

Hi guys, I'm a bit disturbed, my boyfriend said during the night I sleep pat my pregnant belly where the baby is! I was horrified, but he said it wasnt hard or anything and I stopped when he spoke to me but obviously I was asleep and remember nothing. Is this normal or should I seek some help? Thanks x

Why would it be a problem? I very much doubt you're hitting yourself hard or you'd wake yourself up. The baby will be absolutely fine if that's what you're worried about?

CrazyOldBagLady · 06/05/2021 20:31

Don't think it's anything you need to worry about.

Haggisfish · 06/05/2021 20:32

I would think that’s rather lovely unless there is a massive backstory.

Ribrabrob · 06/05/2021 20:33

‘Disturbed’ ?!

flashylamp · 06/05/2021 20:34

You are disturbed because you touched your stomach?

Back story?

Astronaut8 · 06/05/2021 20:34

Why is it so mortifying? 😂 I don’t understand.
You’d know if you were hitting yourself hard?

seeingdots · 06/05/2021 20:35

That's very cute! Why is it a problem?

LoudNowSing · 06/05/2021 20:35

Even in your sleep, you're feeling protective of your baby. That's a nice thing, be happy!

Neonprint · 06/05/2021 20:38

Why would you be horrified?

DinosaurDiana · 06/05/2021 20:39

Your baby is probably moving so you are subconsciously touching it.

You could tie your hands together behind your back before bed?

But seriously, no need to be anxious about patting the bump. I hope you’re not feeling stressed out about the responsibility of pregnancy. You can do it!

georgarina · 06/05/2021 21:22

...what is disturbing or horrifying about this...?

AnUnoriginalUsername · 06/05/2021 21:25

You were pattting your belly? That's normal and fine. I do it all the time. You'd hurt yourself before you hurt baby.

UCOinanOCG · 06/05/2021 21:38

Why is this a problem?

TheNeverEndingOver · 06/05/2021 21:40

What kind of help were you thinking about?

MyDogIsDrivingMeMad · 06/05/2021 21:41

Huh? No, it's not a problem. Patting is a soft touch. As PP say, you'd wake yourself if you were hitting yourself hard enough for it to be a problem...

My boyfriend said it wasnt hard but it wasn't soft either, so must be a protective thing I do pat my tummy nicely when she's moving a lot. Yes deffo bit worried I'd hurt baby or keep her awake. Thanks for the replies!

Was disturbed because I was asleep and I was patting my stomach enough to wake my bf up but I had no idea it happened till I woke up!

And help as in I couldn't find anything about it so maybe have a chat with my gp

OP posts:
wildeverose · 06/05/2021 23:29

Please don't go to your gp for patting your stomach in your sleep - they will think you're a lunatic. They don't tend to mind being woken in the womb so I wouldn't worry about that either!

Garman · 06/05/2021 23:30

You couldn't hurt the baby unless you were absolutely thumping your stomach, a few pats or even hard slaps wouldn't do anything, you're worrying over nothing.

Lou265 · 06/05/2021 23:31

Voomster953 sorry my threads are not to your liking, don't understand how bad morning sickness and asking if people think I'm having a boy or girl are classed as anxiety but cheers for your helpful input. This website is meant for asking questions, especially as a first time mother so don't put me down for being able to ask opinions on things I'm experiencing for the first time. Maybe in future you could focus on what I actually asked rather than trying to psychoanalyse me Smile

Bless you. Apparently I used to do the same & sometimes sleep talk to my bump.
