not to wee after general anaesthetic

I had a general anesthetic for a small op
yesterday morning. I came round at 11am and they let me go to the loo at 12.30pm. It was a small dribble of strongly metallic smelling wee.

Since then I've been drinking water but only managed 2 or 3 more tiny dribbles of wee. It's now after 10am.

Doesn't hurt to wee but do have quite a lot of pain in right buttock (especially when sitting) - not unlike javelin arse but in the buttock not anus. Have painkillers which alleviate it a bit.

I also haven't had a poo or urge to poo. Have had light lunch, a coffee, and normal dinner yesterday, and some breakfast this morning.

Was fasting before op since 10.30pm the night before and no water since 6am yesterday (until after op).

Is this normal? Where is my wee?!

You poor thing that sounds awful.

Could you try a standing up wee into a shower cubicle or onto an old towel maybe? Jug of warm water after to rinse. Whatever works.

FoxyTheFox · 06/05/2021 20:31

If you're still in the hospital, tell them you need some additional pain relief as they should be able to give you something alongside your other painkillers. Post surgery I was written up for big-standard paracetamol and ibuprofen by the clock but could also have liquid morphine in between if I had any break through pain.

I recall a few years ago having a gynae procedure. It tooks ages for me to wee again. I just didn’t have any urge - it was like the process of making urine had been switched off. Eventually came back, but I was getting worries at one point (I’d managed to persuade the hospital to discharge me wirhout having to produce urine - I won’t make that mistake agajn!)

CliftonGreenYork · 06/05/2021 20:47

They usually don't let you leave until you have have 'passed urine'. As someone who has had sepsis twice I would monitor this really carefully.

You poor soul.

When I took tramadol I struggled to pee so could it be related to some pain relief you've had? Also you could just be dehydrated.
Constipation after surgery is common.

Plenty of water and a hot water bottle on your buttock to help with the pain.

Do you have someone who can bring you fybogel so you don't get backed up? Also chocolate & magazines as you sound like you need it Thanks

LMW1990 · 06/05/2021 20:56

Where are you OP? Will help if possible! You shouldn't be alone after surgery unless really unavoidable Thanks

Lougle · 06/05/2021 21:01

I'm amazed that they aren't concerned you aren't passing urine and I'm even more amazed that they are reassured that there is no urine to pass! You should be producing at least 0.5ml/kg/hr of urine. If you're an average-ish woman, say 60kg, you should have passed around 720ml of urine by now.

Who has assessed you and told you it's ok? How much have you been drinking?

ColinTheCat · 06/05/2021 21:01

I had urinary retention after surgery (ovarian cyst removal). Not for that long though. I wasn't discharged until I went to the toilet.

I really hope everything is okay.

Sorry did not have any phone battery. Am at home again.

I did do a small wee after the surgery on Wednesday morning then was discharged and I was able to do some tiny dribbles of wee at home maybe 3 times during the next 24-28 hours before I called the surgeon to check (after advice on here) and he said to return.

Have just done a bigger wee now, not a normal one but quite a big quantity.

Am abroad but thank you enormously to people for offering help, as well as all of the advice and support.

Have got to have a blood test today, psyching myself up for the walk to the lab. Feeling in less pain after sleeping last night :)

Glad you've managed to wee! Can anyone help you get to your appointment today? Don't be afraid to ask for help.

After general anaesthetic I always suffer with urinary retention and get an infection (last time I had 900ml of urine in my bladder before they used a catheter, the pain was horrendous).

It just seems to take ages for my bladder to 'wake up'. Warm baths can help, hope you're back to normal soon Flowers
