Are adrenal fatigue saliva tests any good?

Almost convinced I have symptoms of adrenal fatigue. I know the NHS don’t routinely test for this and have looked online at private options and seen they cost £80+
I’d find the money if they actually work, but wondered if anyone had used them?

"Adrenal fatigue" is not an actual condition. If you have symptoms you are concerned about visit your GP and talk about your concerns.

AutomaticMoon · 06/05/2021 07:28

Of course one can have sub-clinical adrenal insufficiency that might have symptoms

lljkk · 06/05/2021 07:40

What are your symptoms, OP?

"Adrenal fatigue" is not an actual condition

Yes it is, it simply isn't recognised on the NHS.

Addisons or adrenal insufficiency are recognised medical conditions. Adrenal fatigue is nonsense. Anyone with Addisons or adrenal insufficiency will tell you so.
(I have Addison’s).

The most reliable testing for Addison’s is a morning blood test for cortisol levels. Under 100 should be a diagnosis of Addison’s. 200-300 warrants further investigation (usually an Sst test). Anything above that is usually dismissed as okay.

This is because it is not a proper diagnosis and can lead to people self medicating with steroids when they don’t actually have addisons or adrenal insufficiency- which is extremely dangerous and can ironically actually lead to suppression of the adrenal glands which can then actually cause Addison’s or adrenal insufficiency!

I cannot stress how important it is that people do not self diagnose or self medicate the absolute nonsense that is adrenal fatigue. It’s like a swear word on the Addison’s forums.

This makes it sound like the adrenals are a little bit tired and need a snooze. 😂😂

There is no such thing as adrenal fatigue.

Your adrenals either work or they don't. The only in-between is failing.

If you think you have symptoms of adrenal insufficiency or Addison's disease you need a 9am cortisol blood test which your doctor can organise.

@Bagelsandbrie are you primary or secondary?
I'm primary for over 20 years now

They are very helpful and knowledgeable.
But don't go on there asking about adrenal fatigue you'll get told more strongly than you have here that it doesn't exist

SunnySpills · 06/05/2021 08:23

and tests on Hypothyroid forums,

JamesAnderson · 06/05/2021 08:41

@Bagelsandbrie yes very well thank you. I'm "lucky" in that I only have Addison's and hypothyroidism.
It's good they have recognised you're primary and not just assumed you'll be secondary

This is why I keep away from these groups.

A saliva test is more useful for detecting Cushing's disease, which is the opposite of Addison's
