To be worried about my 1 year olds pulse?

My 21 month old is having an overnight sleep study at home tonight for potential obstructive sleep apnoea.

The nurse who handed it over today told us to note down what he was doing if the alarm went off etc.

It’s been going off constantly since we put it on an hour ago and his pulse has been dipping below 80 constantly setting off the alarm - sometimes as low as 57/58.

Background - he has history of recurrent bronchiolitis up to around 12 months old and then occasionally since. Had an inhaler since then (using sporadically). Had blood tests on immune system etc which were all normal.

Surely this isn’t normal?

Are the monitors on properly? We had issue with loose connections at times when doing DS sleep studies.

It’s recording consistently his HR & oxygen levels so I’d assume it’s on ok, there’s no loss of the recordings on it which I have seen happen when he’s had it on wiggling around in hospital before x

Maybe phone 111 ( or is it 101) and see what they say.

That's very low. Do you have a contact number for the person who sorted the study?

Sirzy · 05/05/2021 20:57

I would see about contacting the ward it’s from if you have contacts otherwise make sure you mention it when you take it back tomorrow.

No unfortunately not - it’s handled by the community nurses who only work 9-5 x

Tim many ways having this extreme a reaction to the sleep study shows why it is needed. The chances are that this is happening every night, you just didn’t know before.
Quite a few people in my family have obstructive sleep apnea and this is what their sleep tests found - basically the sleep apnea meant they couldn’t breath and so they were gasping for breath every 2-3 minutes during that time.

Thanks everyone. They’ve said they will urgently review it & call us back with a plan so hopefully we’ll get some answers.
