AIBU to spend £500 on this necklace

I've always bought cheap costume jewelry in the past but husband bought me this necklace last year for a gift and I love it so much.
Its 18ct gold plated but as the rings have rubbed together through wear the plating is starting to come off.
I've been quoted £521 to get the same necklace in solid 9ct.
Is this ridiculous or a fair price? I want a necklace I can wear every day for the next 30 years without it going green or the gold fading.
Any advice appreciated!

Are there any stones in it?

conywarp · 04/05/2021 19:42

It's all relative, isn't it?

Have you got an easy £500? Then yes, spend it.

Struggling to make ends meet? No. Don't do it.

SouthCoastShell · 04/05/2021 19:43

Hi I can't seem to load the photo sorry but there are no stones it's two gold rings linked together on a 18cm gold chain.

Get other quotes as someone may be able to do it cheaper but if you love it that much and can afford it then go for it.

Timper · 04/05/2021 19:47

If you like it and have the money why not? Some people wouldn’t flinch at spending 50k on a piece of jewellery.

SouthCoastShell · 04/05/2021 19:51

I normally only spend £5 on a peice of jewelry from claire's accessories! But I'm fed up with necklaces tarnishing so I would splash out if it's the only necklace I will need for the next 30 years!

Do you have a link?

ImInStealthMode · 04/05/2021 19:53

Do you only wear yellow gold? It would be cheaper to have it made in silver and also won't tarnish or fade.

peachgreen · 04/05/2021 19:53

Depends very much on the weight of the chain and the size of the rings but it's not unreasonable.

krustykittens · 04/05/2021 20:01

You know you love it and will wear it for years, so if you can afford it, why not?

conywarp · 04/05/2021 20:08

Just ignore the obvious question of affordability then. It's literally the only relevant factor when spending £500 on a non essential.

Mmn654123 · 04/05/2021 20:09

Can’t see the photo but you might find something similar already available - so costing about half as much.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/05/2021 20:15

Sounds like a hell of a lot for 9ct to me - I just googled items which fit your description and few are over £200

Is it a "designer" piece where you're paying mostly for the name?

roguetomato · 04/05/2021 20:17

I don't think I would pay that for 9ct gold.

Sparklesocks · 04/05/2021 20:22

Have you shopped around and that’s the best price?

Really it comes down to:

Do you love it?

And more importantly:

Can you comfortably afford it/will it put you in debt?

Thingsthatgo · 04/05/2021 20:27

Gold is pretty expensive at the moment and making jewellery by hand is time consuming. If you have any old gold jewellery you can scrap to put towards it, your jeweller might be able to melt it down and refashion it.
If the jeweller is a decent one they will use a good quality chain etc, which will add to the price but also be a long lasting piece of jewellery for you.

LittleBearPad · 04/05/2021 20:28

Where is it from £500 seems a lot for 9ct gold. What is it in 18ct

Stevearnottsbeard · 04/05/2021 20:34

Gold costs a bomb at the moment so £500 for a handmade piece is quite cheap

wombatspoopcubes · 04/05/2021 20:36

I've been quoted £521 to get the same necklace in solid 9ct.

Who quoted you? A jeweller or a goldsmith? Never ask a jeweller, they just send it to a goldsmith and raise the price with 40% for just handling it. Ask 2 or 3 goldsmiths for a quote.

Also, are you sure you want 9ct?

I don't think its too much for a piece that you l

For a piece that you love

Daisyroselondon · 04/05/2021 20:37

Gold is really expensive right now, it’s a fair price for sure. Especially if you love it!

Hexinthecity · 04/05/2021 20:39

You know we need pics though?!!

SouthCoastShell · 04/05/2021 20:43

It's from a online boutique called Posh totty. Russian ring necklace.

Sorry tried to add photos without luck!

Having a piece handmade costs a lot more than buying off the shelf. That doesn’t sound like a terribly unreasonable price for a handcrafted piece. If you want more gold for your money, you could look for a similar readymade piece.
