So worried about period and ttc

Hi everyone,

I've name changed for this but been here forever (mexican house thief, screaming at Michelangelo, cancel the cheque, old Korean lady, etc).

Blatantly posting here for traffic, please excuse me.

I have stopped taking birth control pills in January, I had the withdrawal bleeding, then first "natural period" in 41 days, then the next one in 30 & I thought OH GREAT, it's settled, I have a regular period.

But now I'm at day 38, and no sign of period. I'm so worried as we're hoping to start ttc this year.

I have booked an app with an ob gyn but unfortunately it's only next week.

Any thoughts/own experience about post pill period? Thanks!!

Mine took months to settle into a pattern. No medical professional seemed concerned about it

soworried28 · 04/05/2021 06:24

@MiloAndEddie really??? That's amazing. My obgyn warned me in January that I might not have a period at all for a month or two, but I thought that if it came and it's not regular, something's worrying...

Look up "polycystic ovarian syndrome" (PCOS) and see do you have any of the symptoms. It's very common and can cause your periods to be extremely irregular. Your GP can prescribe medication to help regulate your cycle and improve your chances when ttc. I also found that acupuncture helped to regulate my periods.
Good luck with ttc.

soworried28 · 04/05/2021 06:31

@Zoeyclash this is my main concern. Years ago (I was 21 & took birth control for 7 years), i had some cysts on my ovaries but never actually diagnosed with pcos. Before birth control I had regular periods. I'm hoping at the ultra sound next week to not see any pcos cysts🤞🏼

It is very common for it to take 6-12 months to settle back into a regular cycle after stopping BC. I really wouldn't panic this soon.

Zoeyclash · 04/05/2021 07:03

@soworried28 if it does turn out to be PCOS it's really not the end of the world. The medication is very effective. I have multiple cysts on both ovaries, and my periods were so irregular they were practically absent (about twice a year) When I was first diagnosed with PCOS and I began ttc, my GP was discussing options etc. IVF was on the cards, but the first step was to try a medication called metformin (clomid), which stimulated ovulation. Thankfully, the medication worked and I managed to have four children, all naturally conceived. Since being pregnant and having had my tubes tied after my fourth child, my PCOS symptoms have become much less.

buckingmad · 04/05/2021 07:04

Took my period well over a year to settle and even then my cycles were longer than pre pill.

toomuchfaster · 04/05/2021 07:05

Are you using any protection? Could you actually be pregnant already?

toomuchfaster · 04/05/2021 07:06

Nb Clomid and Metformin are NOT the same medicine.

nancywhitehead · 04/05/2021 07:14

Honestly it is too early to worry about this. I know it seems like a long time especially when you want to get pregnant, but after the pill it can take a year or even more for your periods to settle into a regular pattern again.

It doesn't mean you can't get pregnant during that time - you can still start to ttc whilst you have irregular periods.

nancywhitehead · 04/05/2021 07:16

Just saw your comment about cysts - almost all women have a few cysts on their ovaries and it's usually nothing to worry about. It only becomes PCOS if there is a large number.

Also how old are you and how long had you been on the pill for?

Mammyofasuperbaby · 04/05/2021 07:29

I wouldn't worry about pcos right now, especially if you've had regular periods in the past, honestly it just sounds like your body is finding its rhythm after years of birth control.
But as a side note metformin regulates insulin production and clomid stimulates ovulation, different medications. Also most women, like myself who have pcos can fall pregnant naturally. I've been pregnant 5 times in 5 years and have 2 wonderful children from that. It just normally takes longer as they have less cycles, it's only a small proportion that need fertility help

soworried28 · 04/05/2021 07:38

@aLilNonnyMouse thanks so much for your kind comment

@Zoeyclash thanks so much for your kindness, your comment is really helpful and encouraging

@toomuchfaster using protection! Def not pregnant, unfortunately...

@nancywhitehead this is exactly my dilemma here. I was 21 when I had the cyst discussion, then I went straight away on birth control, for 7 years. I am almost 29 now. Thanks so much!

@Mammyofasuperbaby your comment is so helpful, and gives me hope. I have to admit I feel a bit shit about it

Thanks so so much everyone

Hey, I've just been reading your story. Mine is very similar and I'm too going for a scan to check for PCOS. I've never had issues in the past, but had been on the pill for 13 years so this could of masked a lot of my symptoms.

@Mammyofasuperbaby so reassuring to read your words, when the doctor first suggested it, I instantly thought that was it for me

soworried28 · 05/05/2021 05:36

@Stresshead129 I'm actually going for the scan today! When are you going? How long ago did you go off birth control? Any other side effects of quitting?

Ok! Resurrecting the thread as I have an update. Diagnostic is Pcos (micro pcos, a light form of it basically, not so severe). I got a shitload of blood tests that I'm going to do tomorrow. Any tips/happy stories about ttc with PCOS? I am disappointed and whiny, I have to admitSad
