Neighbour and his cats are driving me nuts!

We moved into our dream house at the beginning of the year. The house is nice, but the garden is perfect, it’s what sold the house to us really. It’s a long rectangle shape, with a hedge splitting it in half. One half is the ‘adult’ half. BBQ space, nice table and chairs, grass and flowers etc. The other half, we’ve made into the children’s side. It’s got the trampoline, mud kitchen, sand pit etc.

A few weeks ago, we dug up some of the kids side and planted sunflowers, carrots, pumpkins etc. The next morning we came down to find cats had dug it all up and pooped everywhere. I cleaned it up, we replanted it and hoped that was it. It wasn’t, it was just the start. The cats seem to come into the garden on a night and destroy it! They poo in the mud kitchen, the sand pit, the planted areas. The children have stood in it and walked it through the house. They’ve scratched the wood up marking the sides. Worst of all, they’ve started killing birds and leaving them in my garden, half eaten 😭

I spoke to the neighbour and he just kind of shrugged and said what can you do, they’re cats 😠. I’ve tried powder but it’s had no effect at all. I’m just so sick of it! What can I do? I don’t want to do anything that will hurt them, but I’m so sick of their mess and need to do something!

WIBU to see the neighbour again? I don’t even know what he could do, but I hate these damn cats!
@Peppermintteadrinker

Birds shit all over my garden and windows. They steal my food from my garden and they make me unhappy. Why do I need to put up with these pests?
(No, I don’t kill birds before anyone accuses me)
Birds are wild animals, not selfish people's pets which ruin other people's gardens.

@UnconsideredTrifles

Personally I think it's 'a little bit sad' that people's choice of pets has resulted in a massive decline in native bird populations.

We've found the high pitched cat repellers very effective. They're a bit of a pain if you get the angles wrong and keep setting them off yourself but they've definitely got rid of the cats (we were living next door to an RSPCA warden who had at least 5).

The RSPB website state there is no scientific evidence that cats are to blame for a reduction in bird populations.
WaltzingBetty · 03/05/2021 13:53

Are you sure it isn't foxes?
Digging up the plants sounds more like foxes than cats

Pinkpaisley · 03/05/2021 13:58

Cat lover here.

He should be installing cat proof fencing to keep his cats in. That is what he can do.

Words · 03/05/2021 13:59

Completely OT, burnt what is a 'mud kitchen?'

Words · 03/05/2021 14:00

*but

BlackCatShadow · 03/05/2021 14:01

How are the cats getting in? Are they jumping over the fence? Or are there holes in the fence?

I think if you have free-roaming chickens, you need to make sure your garden is secure. You say there are no foxes, but you never know. It would be upsetting if one got in. Also, i think legally chickens have to be kept under cover due to avian flu, sorry off-topic.

I would look into ways of securing your garden from the cats and other wildlife. A lot of animals will shit in an uncovered sandpit.

Go to b&m and get some lavender plants. They dont like the stuff

I don't think that's true. My cat sleeps in the lavender Grin.

Ace! Another cat shit thread

I should have said apparently Grin they're cheap enough atm and they're good to keep pests away from turnips anyroad.
LunaMuffinTop · 03/05/2021 15:10

YANBU OP and I say they as a cat owner thankfully mine are indoors and don’t upset the neighbours but if this was my cats I would offering to help come up with a solution to stop them you can get stuff to put on too of the fence to stop them from getting over the fence. Cats are a bugger for going where ever they feel like and if cat owners choose to let their cats be outdoors they should have things in place so that they can’t upset the neighbours not everyone likes cats.

sunsetsand · 03/05/2021 15:49

Sounds like MN version of hell.

Trampoline, cat shit, chickens, mud kitchen, dream house

EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology · 03/05/2021 15:52

Don't forget my frogs and chickenwire.

Operasinger · 03/05/2021 15:52

Set a motion water sprinkler, it definitely works.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/05/2021 16:11

@ClareBlue

A Jack Russell will keep everything out. Vicious little things but they do a job second to none
I disagree (lurcher owner) Grin

Our girl's main 'job' is putting the fear of God into any trespassing cats. She's very proud of it.

Peacocking · 03/05/2021 16:40

Nuclear option. Get a humane cat trap or two. Bait and set them in a visible place. Be clear if asked that any cats caught in your garden will be dropped off at a vets / centre at #inconvenientlocationofyourchoice.

Suddenly cats going into your garden and destroying it becomes a problem for their owners as well as for you...

(I own a lot of cats. I also feel very strongly that cat owners get away with murder and we cats owners should take a damn sight more responsibility for our cats whereabouts. )

Cushionsnotpillows · 03/05/2021 16:45

I also think it's a little bit sad that an artificial play environment is to be promoted at the expense of realising that we share our world with other living creatures.

So the OP should let her neighbour's cats love of shitting on her things to over rule the interests, fun and development of her OWN CHILDREN in her OWN garden???!!! Fucks sake, that's peak batshit Mumsnet, heard it all now.

Hyperion100 · 03/05/2021 16:46

Get a scarecrow cat sprayer. Hook it up to your hose, switch it on. Motion activated. They learn pretty soon to stay away.

Cushionsnotpillows · 03/05/2021 16:57

We used the Lion Roar stuff OP it did work for a while but they are coming back so it's back to the super soaker for us this summer again.

everybodysang · 03/05/2021 17:01

oh god I'd be so mortified if my cats did this to a neighbour! All of our neighbours actually have cats so it's not a problem round here but I wouldn't know what to do if it did become an issue. Can you really get cat proof fencing to keep them in?

VeganVeal · 03/05/2021 17:06

@Peppermintteadrinker

It's mad that other people's choice of pets can cause this amount of trouble. Why do we have to accept it? They shouldn't be pets then. Sorry cat lovers. I know it won't change but why is it ok to have pets that shit in other people's gardens, kill wildlife and cause your neighbours unhappiness?
For those three reasons you've mentioned Wink
WildfirePonie · 03/05/2021 17:08

Build a catio in your garden, basically what a pp mentioned with giant posts and chicken wire. Chicken wire the top too if you fancy for maximum coverage.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/05/2021 17:12

Sonic cat deterents
Chilli powder
Citrus peel
Holly leaves in areas the children don't go
Water pistol

All work.

YellowGlasses · 03/05/2021 17:14

It sounds like you have transformed the garden into one big litter tray and most of the neighbourhood cats are probably using it.
