Working from home?

I have a job I love but had been furloughed for a year, I returned two months ago but have been struggling since. In June 2020 my dad was diagnosed with dementia and moved in with me. As I was with him all I didn’t fully recognise how bad he had got when I returned to work. I had to rush home every lunch time which made me late back as the office is quite far from my house. On Wednesday I got a call from my neighbour to say my dad was wandering down the street knocking on people’s door looking for my mum (she died 4 years ago) all the neighbours know him and one took him in for a cup of tea until I could get there but obviously a confused 75 year old man should not be wandering the streets on his own. Yesterday my manager called me into his office and gave me a warning, he was really nice about everything but I felt like I was letting everyone down and handed in my notice. I had already had to change my working hours as my dd’s dad passed away last year from COVID and although we weren’t together he did all the school pickups and helped me out when I had meetings.
I feel like I have rambled a bit but wanted to give a full picture. Anyway I am looking for a job where I can mainly work from home but I can’t find anything that isn’t cold calling or something similar. I hear everyone talking about jobs where they’re working from home but can seem to find any. aibu to think there are genuine wfh jobs or am I searching for the impossible?

Sorry to change the subject but have you had a social services assessment for your dad? They might be able to put care calls in for you to help you to still work.

Also does your dad receive attendance allowance? Could you claim carers allowance.

You were a bit rash handing in notice when really some support from employer was what you needed.

Agree that handing in your notice isn't a sensible thing to do.
Is that something you can rescind ?
It's a tough job market out there.
There are various things you can put in place to give your Dad support.

It sounds like you are going through a really tough time .
I agree with PP handing your notice in may not of been the best thing to do , as inapart from the drop in income you may ( in time ) start to resent your dad as he has albeit unintentionally stopped your career from progressing , I know it sounds harsh but it may come to that .

Can you go back to your employer to see if you can wfh or work part time ?

As PP have said you should be able to get both physical and financial help for your dad .
I wouldn't advocate locking your dad in the house but can you lock your garden gate so he can not go any further and give a key to a neighbour just in case there is a accident .

I wfh some days now which would of been inconceivable pre-covid so I don't think it is a case of there not been any WFH jobs out there just that lots of people now do their jobs in a different way so that can wfh

So sorry to hear this. Could you not have put in a request for flexible working? By law they have to at least consider it.

TBH op, even wfh is going to be difficult whilst you’re looking after your dad. I wfh and I know my company don’t allow you to wfh if you have any caring responsibilities. Maybe your dad is at a stage where he needs to be looked after in a care facility
