Job 1

£8k more
Private sector
Massive workload
Role similar/aligned to my previous work ex
9-5pm on paper but will be 6pm lost days with having to work more in case of live deals
Micro managers - from the impression I got from interview, also added work which isn’t mentioned in the job specs
Bigger organisation.
Wfh now but commute is 50 mins
Better prospects to move to next role

Job 2
Different role in same sector - steep learning curve initially as new to products/provess
9-5pm, 5:30 pm most days
Supportive team/bosses
Big organisation but lesser known than first
Less pressure/ hectic relatively
Lower salary (~ £70k though)
Wfh but commute 50 mins

I'm in mid 30s and fortunate enough to land both offers (London). Have a 1 year old going to nursery 8-6pm. Which one would you go for 1 or 2?

How important are the better prospects? Will you need a much higher salary in future to pay for a house move to an area with better schools or send DC to private? If you have another DC would one of the jobs be more flexible if you needed that? If your DC is sick and nursery can't take them which job would be easier about it if your DC DF can't look after them?

I'd be inclined towards the first one because of the better prospects, but I don't know how important that is to you. And needs to be weighed against childcare.

Apileofballyhoo · 01/05/2021 22:38

Sorry, also noting 6pm pick up for DC. Will leaving to pick up DC work against those better projects prospects? And how would you manage staying late if it's required?

UhtredRagnarson · 01/05/2021 22:41

Have you got someone else to do pick uk form nursery as you won’t be able to do it with a 50 minute commute from either job.

Hankunamatata · 01/05/2021 22:41

How long would u have to stick job 1 before you could move to next role? Would u mind the heavy workload and extra hours or would you feel resentful?

Hankunamatata · 01/05/2021 22:44

Having to work 5 extra hours a week for job 1 - wouldnt that cancel out the 8k difference between the two jobs

itsmehere1 · 01/05/2021 22:51

Thank you all, will try to answer.

Yes with regards to nursery - husband will pick up
some days as his work is wfh definitely this year fully after that will extend her hours to 6:30pm

Not planning a second dc

Extra money would be helpful but not very significantly

Will have to leave work, pick up dd, get her to sleep and pick up pending up work at job 1 from my gut feeling. Job 2 - I think I can negotiate an earlier start and finish

About feeling resentful about workload - yes I think that’s a factor, as I generally do tend to feel resentful when there’s a lot of stress at work and can’t cope. First time parenting in lockdown already has put a lot of pressure in the past year (mentally)

I’m planning to stay at least 2 years in either job before thinking of moving.

Fair point with regards to extra timing and pay per hour calculation @Hankunamatata

maytherebepeace · 01/05/2021 22:53

2nd job, sounds a nicer atmosphere. Happiness and good mental health over money any day.

Queenie8 · 01/05/2021 22:55

Job 2 without a doubt. The extra salary doesn't compensate the extra hours, nor the pressure and stress.

Plus steep learning curve will add to your experience and cv.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 01/05/2021 23:38

If you can't figure out which one you'd prefer, maybe look at which one you'd like least. Maybe list a few bullet points for each job with the tasks you'd least enjoy and see what that list tells you.

UhtredRagnarson · 01/05/2021 23:49

Try this OP which one would you be most upset about if they withdrew the job offer?

itsmehere1 · 02/05/2021 12:06

Thank you everyone

Job 2.

Job 1 sounds like it's a bunch of twats there to be honest, and if you think your workload sounds big there already, double that and that's more likely what you'll be doing. They will expect way more out of you than you think. It's how companies like that work. If you want that, go for it.

Merryoldgoat · 02/05/2021 12:31

I’m not interested in being micro managed - it’s soul destroying. For that alone I’d take 2 but try to negotiate up if possible?

RoseMartha · 02/05/2021 12:40

I would prefer one with less pressure and hours so I could spend more time with dc.

Grace58 · 02/05/2021 12:49

I’d go for job 2, the atmosphere sounds more positive and you say it will be less stressful. I’m a big believer in prioritising work life balance personally!

KnightsInWhiteSateen · 02/05/2021 12:57

Job 2, no question. I've done a Job 1 (and a Job 1 on steroids!) and it's just not worth it to me, especially for 8k more, which is really more like 4k more take-home at above 70k, so £330 more per month?

Your hourly rate for Job 1 will actually be lower, you'll be stressed and - in my experience - unable to properly focus on enjoying time with your DC even in the reduced hours you do get with them.

I've been given a dose of perspective through experience and my advice would therefore be Job 2!

Slayduggee · 02/05/2021 12:59

I would go for job 2 as I can’t stand a manager who micromanages

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 02/05/2021 13:00

I absolutely loathe being micro managed. It would be a huge deal breaker for me.

How do you feel about it op?

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 02/05/2021 13:18

Job 2. Definitely.

PerpendicularVincent · 02/05/2021 14:06

If job 2 has decent prospects I would go for that one. Shorter hours, less stress.

I can't stand being micromanaged and find it hugely stressful.

Dustyhedge · 02/05/2021 14:34

I would go for job number 2. Supportive team is so important but I couldn’t cope with micromanagement. It is miserable when you’re senior but don’t have autonomy.
