Leaving a temp job

Zig27 · 01/05/2021 13:48

I am temping for my old employer and want to leave. The person I work with is very toxic and there is a burn out culture in the company with an expectation to do so. I don’t have to work in these conditions as it affecting my health and have been offered work elsewhere. What do I say to the agency or employer when they ask? Thanks.

"The job isn't for me"

Just be honest. I temp for 3 years. Agency suit themselves too once commission coming in!! Ask them for other roles

'Another opportunity has come up which suits me better'

Do you feel you want to tell someone about the bad culture?

Zig27 · 01/05/2021 14:48

@Darker I honestly think if I told them about the bad culture which they are well aware of they wouldn’t care as their philosophy is to get another temp. The senior management are not aware of how toxic my colleague is but they would probably realise then why temps leave.

are you able to give a week's notice,

i guess it can't hurt to mention why

I am a med sec temp and have been for most of my life. I started out working for agencies after 10 years of working in a teaching hospital. I was in a really boring agency placement which was for an indefinite length of time as they couldn't keep any permanent staff in the role (GP practice which I think is now defunct). After 10 days or so my old teaching hospital decided they wanted me back to temp for them (they went through my agency). My agency said it was fine but I had to speak to the head of the practice I was assigned to to ask them if OK with them. They were most displeased and said, grudgingly, that they couldn't really say no as they expected I'd just go anyway (not sure I would have if they had said no, as I don't ever like to feel I've let someone down though I probably would have had to say I was going abroad for an a very prolonged trip if they hadn't found a permanent person in the next couple of weeks - I think they were going to ask me to work permanently for them). Anyway, I took that as a yes (it was a really awful job - I'd got everything up to date so they didn't need me if they could just get their resident staff to stop gossiping for most of the day and do some work instead) but they were most miffed. There was a rather unfriendly atmosphere while I'd worked the rest of the week out and then escaped. I don't know why they would think I wouldn't want to leave - it was mind-numbingly dull (and I had done scores of other med sec jobs so I had a lot to compare it with).

Personally I think it is valuable for a organisation to know if a member of staff is causing issues. It paints a picture and it might corroborate experiences other people have had and help someone else out in future, someone who doesn't have another job to go to.

I turned freelance a year or so later so I can please myself about what jobs I take and turn down now.

The toxic colleague is covering someone’s maternity while I cover the toxic colleague. The toxic one says on a regular basis that she hates people. I don’t know why you would work for an organisation that works with the public which is part of your job on a daily basis to work with the public.

What's keeping you there?

(I find my own workplace quite toxic at the moment and am asking myself the same question!).

It was ok for the first 3 weeks then the cracks have started to show this week. Colleague is off for a few days this week so it should be bearable.
