Anyone done their divorce without a solicitor?

All the forms for the divorce and financial consent order are on the gov website so I think I could do it as me and ex are amicable and have agreed things.

Anyone else done it?

I know someone who did and it worked fine and was very very quick. They had minimal assets though.

Yes I did it online for a couple of hundred pounds. We had no children and owned nothing together.

Yes I did. Me and ex husband were amicable, we didn't own a house or have any assets together so there were no finances to sort. We have a child but we sorted all contact/maintenance plans ourselves. It was really quick, can't remember exactly how much it cost but it was less than £300.

OlympicProcrastinator · 01/05/2021 07:22

Yes but only because we didn’t own our own home or have any money so it was just a matter of submitting forms to court. Cost a couple of hundred quid. If you have assists or are arguing over contact arrangements it’s not a good idea.

OP this might also be an option:

They’re barristers but they advise the couple together rather than the traditional model which has involved each party engaging a separate legal adviser. Award-winning service and worth a look.

I did it mostly without. Just got solicitor to check over what we had agreed and draft consent order.

Pretty much what we did. Separated and agreed split of assets and child arrangements between us.

I dealt with the land registry transfer for the house (no mortgage - it's more involved if one party is taking over a mortgaged property), all the forms for the divorce etc.

By the time the divorce was applied for we'd been separated a few years and I just got a solicitor to prepare a consent order detailing what we'd done so that the legal side was okay.

I did, was easy.
Cost in total (2004), was £125.
However, my 1st husband and I had no children, and had agreed to spilt assets 50/50. I got a free half hour of a solicitor’’s time, and was advised to not go for maintenance, which I didn’t want anyway. It was worth having a chat, though they did not do the divorce. I sorted out our endowment policies, and we each had half of those, the bank accounts, and the house. We’d been married for 14 years, and I sued for divorce on grounds of adultery. His. I did not name the OW, as I was advised, perhaps incorrectly, that naming her would give her skin in the game.

It’s worth investigating, as my ex and I were in agreement. I did the divorce, and he trusted me to do it it right, but I appreciate that this might not be the case for everyone. I’ve also prepared the financial statements for my friend’s divorce, but that cost her husband £25,000 in solicitor’s fees, as he was behaving like a total bell-end!🙂
Good luck! 🤞🏻

Yes, ex and I agreed the financial split and did all the forms ourselves. I still had to go and see a solicitor for one part of it, can’t quite remember why - so it worked out to be a few hundred quid in costs. But we had no kids to provide for and we’d both worked for all the marriage so it was a very straightforward split.

poppycat10 · 01/05/2021 07:59

Yes my parents did. The forms are not complicated, I was grown up by then so no maintenance etc and it was a straight-forward split of 50% of assets. They sold their mortgage-free house and got half each.

The only caveat to that would be if you want any share of his pension or there is anything complicated around his or your assets.

My DH got divorced from his first wife online! Cost £1,000 they had no assets though and it was relatively straight forward. No children.
