to think that having a bonfire is pure laziness

It seems that people around here are always having fires in their gardens. There is a tip quite close by so I just don’t understand the need! Not to mention the fact that it’s a PITA to surrounding houses. I think it’s very thoughtless and don’t know why people can’t just go to the tip to get rid of stuff (and yes the household I’m talking about have cars)

Cause burning stuff is fun! Hmm

Egghead81 · 30/04/2021 18:42

I’d think finding a space for a bonfire, setting it up, overseeing it and then clear up is not the lazy way out?!

Lockdownbear · 30/04/2021 18:42

Burning wood is carbon neutralSmile

WutheringBites · 30/04/2021 18:43

Depends on what you’re burning. We’ve got a whole bundle of box blight, so should really burn that (but haven’t yet, as I keep worrying about the neighbours!)

Watsername · 30/04/2021 18:45

Are they actual bonfires or having a fire in a fire pit? Aren’t fire pits increasingly common right now as a way to stay warm with friends in the garden? Fire pits are lovely!

MasterBeth · 30/04/2021 18:45

Burning wood is not carbon neutral at all.

Theunamedcat · 30/04/2021 18:46

Because you have old letters and bank statements to get rid of and quite frankly its faster than shredding them? I had to over lockdown because of amazon and there BOX IT ALL policy but then my neighbours pointed out that our recycling men take the extra cardboard if you put it neatly by the side I was a bit embarrassed actually where I lived prior they wouldn't even empty your bin if it wasn't closed fully I used to lower my daughter in to trample the bin down 🤣

Ednadidit · 30/04/2021 18:51

Oh my god bonfires are getting on my nerves. Next door keep lighting garden waste on fire. Honestly, if you can pay three people every other week to whip round the garden with power tools, you can afford £35 p/a for the garden bin service. And they always do it at bedtime so I go up to bed and my bedroom reeks of smoke. Or if they do it in the day, other people’s washing is ruined. YANBU.

PerspicaciousGreen · 30/04/2021 18:54

Concur they can be a bit antisocial, but they're also bloody fun!

bigbadbedknobs · 30/04/2021 19:03

Not all councils have fully reopened tips, it's a right pain I'm afraid

AlwaysLatte · 30/04/2021 19:03

We like to have occasional bonfires. We compost everything we can, use a garden waste bin for non-compostables and when we get fallen/lopped trees we chop and season the wood for the log burner, but there are things inevitably that can't be dealt with any of the above ways. So we wait until the wind is blowing across the fields where there are no houses, and it's fine. So bonfires are fine, as long as people are responsible about them. In the middle of houses is not fine, and I wouldn't do that.

Lockdownbear · 30/04/2021 19:03

@MasterBeth

Burning wood is not carbon neutral at all.
Wood only releases the same carbon it absorbed over its lifetime.
LindainLockdown · 30/04/2021 19:04

More like bloody selfish, wish they were banned everywhere.

Lockdownbear · 30/04/2021 19:05

And if the wood was left to rot the carbon would be released anyway.

AlwaysLatte · 30/04/2021 19:06

Yes someone mentioned fire pits, we enjoy those too. But again ours is placed away from any other houses.
I do think that if you live in eg a row of terraced houses with tiny gardens then any kind of bonfire or fire pit is not on.

YellowGlasses · 30/04/2021 19:07

I’d assume it’s more likely to be fire pits or equivalent to try to keep warm because of the current restrictions.

pictish · 30/04/2021 19:09

Love a fire. It’s a shame so many people are against them...they’re fundamentally sating to me. I don’t mind if a neighbour has a wee bonfire or fire pit at all. We have occasional sausage sizzles and marshmallows on a fire and no one has ever complained.

The outrage over bonfires seems to be a Mumsnet thing.

StoneofDestiny · 30/04/2021 19:09

The worst bit is most of these morons do it during the day when the weather is nice and sunny when people want to open their windows for fresh air, hang their washing out and sit in their garden.
If they did it at night on damp wet days there would be less nuisance.

MamaWeasel · 30/04/2021 19:12

We love a good bonfire here, but always after 6pm and it is always very carefully managed by dh

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/04/2021 19:16

Our local tip have made it so difficult to get rid of stuff I'm not surprised people have to deal with it themselves. It's better than fly tipping which seems to be what councils are now causing... Angry

I used to love it when my parents had a bonfire! Health and safety was nowhere to be seen!!
Sadly we live in a terraced house with a tiny garden so no chance of setting fire to stuff here.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/04/2021 19:20

Oooh love a fire! The smell and the sound of crackling wood. Lovely.
