AIBU to cover up the smoke alarm to clean the grill? Or is there another way?

Had the oven cleaned today - looks amazing.
But apparently he could not clean the grill elements because they might break (my DP was dealing with this while I was on a work call so I didn't get this info first hand but DP is pretty reliable).
This is annoying because that's really why I wanted it cleaned. If we try to use the grill, black smoke billows forth and we have to abandon all attempts to grill food.

The oven cleaners suggestion was to to put the grill on and burn it off. Which I guess makes sense but the smoke alarms would go wild so will have to cover with cling film (or something else?).

Any other ideas to clean the elements? (Or should I believe the professional advice?).

Are they normal looking grill elements? You have to clean them or they will carry on smoking forever. Had to do mine last week as had light layer of oil on but every time oven was on would smoke for hours. No sign of “burning away”. Just used soapy cloth nothing major. If the rest of the oven is spotless should be a big job.

*should not!

Thanks @Akire
I think they're just normal grill elements. I was surprised he said that they couldn't be cleaned, but am a bit reluctant as he said they would be damaged.

Having lifted bodies from these situations, I would say no. That said if you are not alone in the house and make sure you are safe, do it but don't ever underestimate the power of fire detection systems.

You can’t use cleaning chemicals that could catch fire or scrub them with anything harsh but gentle wipe with soapy cloth is fine. I double checked google!

@grantoderek I wouldn't be alone & would definitely uncover them after the burning!

but I will try @Akire suggestion first - thank you.

I would. The chances of dying as a result of a house fire while you are wide awake and aware that the smoke alarm is turned off must be practically zero.
