Being disgusted at the stupidity and irresponsibility of Coronation Street!

Peter Barlow is already on the transplant list.

How is this sensible to broadcast in a country where we have too many people suffering from alcoholism?!

If anyone had suffered from this or knows someone who does (or did and they’re now victim to it and died), you’ll know it’s not as simple as coronation street is portraying it. You need to be sober for six months before even being considered for a transplant.

If he had end stage liver disease, things would be a lot more dyer for him than they appear.

Anyone watching this who has personal experience of alcoholism may feel like me, devastated at how easy it’s all appearing when in reality it’s such a long hard process that often ends in death.

I just want them to get this right and serve as a reminder to people that alcoholism as a disease kills too often and it’s not a quick fix. Why can’t they just portray it accurately?

I’m probably repeating myself but I’m so disappointed in them.

@Aliceandthemarchhare

Soaps aren’t representative of real life BUT I do think there’s a case for not being grossly insensitive.

Corrie is awful at the moment though. It’s turned into hollyoaks.

No. Hollyoaks works very hard to be as accurate as possible in their portrayals of real life situations, such as showing lifelong complications from overdosing, the effects of radicalisation and grooming, the devastation of sexual assault. They take their social responsibility very highly. Coronation street is just rubbish.

I just can’t watch them till Tyrone and Fiz apart. Just awful. Shan’t watch anymore.

Thank you for all the discussion folks.

Obviously I recognise that soaps are fictional 🙄. I’m just, like other posters have mentioned, baffled that they try and highlight real issues and do so well at it on some cases but then fail others massively. With the pandemic, alcohol abuse is rising even further in this country and I don’t think their portrayal of end stage liver disease is a responsible way to go - it’s reckless and thoughtless.

Yes, some of you may look at soaps as being beneath you and not something you would regard as being able to educate BUT I feel like they do educate sometimes and this time they’ve chosen not to.

They started so well with showing ESLD doesn’t always have to be down to alcohol abuse and then HE when Peter was confused. His character’s physical appearance clearly diminishing every week but then they got it wrong at the end, where possibly it matters most.

I also must apologise for my dire mishap 🙄.

Anyway, yes, it’s just a soap WHICH WE ALL KNOW. I just thought, like some other posters, they could use their platform to educate. This doesn’t mean I’m thick or stupid or believe tv is real - it just means I’m disappointed in their portrayal of alcoholism and ESLD.

@Joeblack066, except when it comes to actual medical staff. Staff manage to murder patients and others. Get promoted too quickly and beyond their qualification level. They don't get suspended/sacked, or not employed in the first place, for criminal offences. Tegan Lomax was drinking all day when Joe fell of the Ferris wheel. Within hours of the fall, she alone made the decision to turn off his life support and talked mercedes into it. They do get other stuff right though.

There have been so many storylines on Corrie that have made me shout at the tv. Remember the fake flats storyline? Deposits were taken for the pretend flats direct to the developer who then did a runner. So many holes in that story..

eatsleepread · 30/04/2021 19:25

The soaps seldom get the heavy stuff right. I do agree that it's daft and irresponsible though.

@LakieLady

I've lost a friend and a few clients to alcoholic liver disease and it's an awful way to go.

But I don't expect realism from a soap opera, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that Coronation Street's depiction of this is so unrealistic.

In the past Coronation Street has been praised for its handling of sensitive subjects.
