to get fed up with receiving more than the average amount of abuse on the road just because I drive a range rover?

I get the whole environment thing psses some people off but this seems out of proportion with the abuse. I am a considerate driver and really object to the abuse especially when my DC's are in the car and people are swearing. Recently parked car in a supermarket carpark to have someone who lived in a nearby flat on one of the higher floor start shouting that i should get back in my RR and pss off.

not hiding, sweet, just not been on it.

we'll have all three of ours in the Vauxhall Astra.

Mrs4x4 · 13/11/2007 22:54

expat in scotland think you are being a bit judgemental here. To some extent I agree with your BMW driver comment however would not say that they all drive like tw*ats (sorry can't bring myself to use that word in its fullness) more that all shitty drivers tend to be in a BMW which is not quite so damning a view on a large percentage of the driving population.

Mrs 4x4 - you don't need to justify yourself to the lumpenproletariat!

unknownrebelbang · 13/11/2007 22:55

Edam makes some good points about pedestrian safety.

Having said that, no one should abuse you, or anyone else on the road, whatever the vehicle/however bad the driving is.

There is far too much aggression in life in general, and certainly on the roads.

you know what, Mrs4x4, i don't care if you think i'm judgemental, because people who drive those things generally drive like no one else is using the road.

and the kill people - both pedestrians AND people in normal cars - far, far more often.

their lights also dazzle drivers in normal cars, leading to further accidents.

they're a menace on the road and should be restricted to people who actually have a need for them.

round here, you only see farmers and tradespeople driving them.

rantinghousewife · 13/11/2007 22:56

Mrs 4x4, I applaud your niceness but you are definitely rare amongst the breed of 4x4 drivers, I've encountered. On more than one occassion, we've been nearly mown down at a crossing with lights by a 4x4 and I'm sorry but, if it was my child that your tank killed, I wouldn't be interested in your justifications for owning one. Having said that I don't think people should swear at you, at least not out loud.
Oh and it's definitely not out of envy Bubble, I have no interest in cars whatsoever, other than as a way to get me from A to B. I'm not feckin Jeremy Clarkson, you know.

LyraSilvertongue · 13/11/2007 22:56

Range Rovers and other cars like them put my children at greater risk on the road. Therefore there is nothing to like about them.

edam · 13/11/2007 22:57

Exactly, Shergar - strangely Mrs4x4 chose not to respond to my post pointing out how dangerous her car is to pedestrians, especially children. But hey ho, she feels safer, so that's clearly fine...

OneTrickMummy · 13/11/2007 22:57

Shergar makes some good points about pedestrain safety.

HartingtonRoad · 13/11/2007 22:57

look we should all just live and let live....

but NEVER let a 4x4 into a line of traffic!!!!!

sweetkitty · 13/11/2007 22:58

I am missing you

Do you think you will be able to get 3 car seats across the back of an Astra? You have smiliar gaps to mine although I suppose you can have your DD1 on a booster by then she is older than mine.

I just want a car I can get 3 car seats across the back, get the DC in and out without contorting them, have them able to stretch their legs out and be able to fit a double buggy in the boot (actually have got several double buggies in boot of Clio), oh and I want it to be easy to park (actually asked DP if I could have a Nissan Quashqai sp? as on the advert they apparently park themselves) and be cheap on fuel?

But I have more chance of winning the lottery I know

OneTrickMummy · 13/11/2007 22:58

Mrs4x4 and Handlemecarefully: yes I think you DO have to justify yourself to Edam and Shergar's points, actually.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2007 22:59

'Range Rovers and other cars like them put my children at greater risk on the road. Therefore there is nothing to like about them. '

They also put people in normal cars at greater risk in a collision and dazzle the hell out of people in normal cars, particularly because people who drive them are discourteous and don't dip their lights.

handlemecarefully · 13/11/2007 23:00

lol - I don't think so.

peacelily · 13/11/2007 23:00

i live opposite a primary school where idiot parents turn up in these monstosities to drop Sebastian and Jemima off, probably having driven about 500 yards to do so because they can't be arsed to walk (BTW Mrs 4x4if it's raining USE AN UMBRELLA, if it's windy DEAL WITH IT).

they then park illegally outside my house and loll about talking to each other giving ME evils when I'm attempting to extricate my Ford Focus out with my 14 month old dd in it.

In 3 years she will be crossing that road with me to go to that school. these creations are a liablity and a risk to the safety of children, especially if their owners are as negligent driving them as they are parking them.

shergar · 13/11/2007 23:00

I don't think that there is anything that makes me madder really - the whole 'me me me' attitude regardless of the dangers to everyone else. I have seen too much of the carnage firsthand and I know how dangerous they are to small pedestrians (come to think of it I've seen a fair few autopsies on the elderly who've met a similar fate at the zebra crossing from a 4X4). I hope they are taxed off the roads shortly, or better still banned in densely-populated areas.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2007 23:00

no, we won't, kitty, so i'll have to ride in the middle of the backseat if dh is driving and dd1 will have to ride in front - no passenger airbag.

we can't afford another car.

but it's a myth you need a people carrier or 4x4 because you have 3 children.

OneTrickMummy · 13/11/2007 23:01

I think it's the height of the lights, even when they are dipped.

And they seem more powerful than normal headlights.

As you would expect for something designed for unmade up tracks through the jungle, and warfare.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2007 23:02

'better still banned in densely-populated areas. '

here, here! think they should be banned entirely excepting folks who need them for business or as mobility cars.

sweetkitty · 13/11/2007 23:02

What I hate is when you park away from the shops deliberately as it's easier to get the DC out then get back and some idiot in a people carrier or RR had parked next to you and you cannot get the door open and have to try and get your DC in through the other side as you can't leave them in a buggy whilst reversing out. Inconsiderate tossers always pick a little car to park beside and block.

Sorry maybe you don't do this Mrs4x4 but it's nearly always a RR type thing that does.

OneTrickMummy · 13/11/2007 23:03

Handlemecarefully is 'LOL' at the fact that children are needlessly dead because someone chooses to drive a car more dangerous than normal cars?

Wow.

That takes some arrogance.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2007 23:04

the lights are usually xeon, so they dazzle an oncoming driver or someone who's driving in front of one even more.

the lens is also completely clear.

because they're meant to be used off road where there aren't many or any other vehicles about.

Wotz · 13/11/2007 23:04

Now a Land Rover, they have a purpose and a good use..

Avoid verbal abuse from a higher floor flat, (who probably couldn't see inside your car, so couldn't see dcs), and shop online and save the emissions and stress for all.

Sorry but I don't like your taste in cars. You may well not like mine either.

Why do 4x4 cars aim straight at me like I am an ant on the road?

sweetkitty · 13/11/2007 23:07

expat - we would never get 5 in the Clio it's so cramped as it is so need to get something bigger but not a 7 seater or 4x4 that's unnecessary

I have never understood why people with 1 or no children buy huge big cars that cost a fortune to run but maybe thats why "look at me I can afford this monster that does 5 miles to the gallon, I'm so rich"
