Please don't turn this into an anti fur debate, i hate the fir trade as much as the next person.

I have my mum's fur coat, she died at Christmas.

I don't know what to do with it? I gave a faus fur coat to a friend but obv dudnt want the fur. Just tried a vintage clothes shop and i swear youd have thought i wanted to sell her the scalps of murdered children Hmm

It was my nans before that. The poor ctitters are long passed.

It feels wrong just to discard it for two reasons.

  1. It belonged to my mum and as such there is emotional atrachnent.
  2. It seems pretty disrespectful to the poor bloody mink to just discard it.

I don't care about money, will a charity shop be able to mske use of it?

Any thoughts? I don't want to keep it - feels wrong

@MrsSprogett

I wear mine, I have two. Not popular I know. Mink steal swans eggs and eat ducklings, They are vicious. The coats will last me a lifetime. Im not replacing it every year with something made of synthetic materials that males up land fill

Sorry but this comment is Hmm

It's not vicious for an animal to eat meat to survive. The fur trade on the other hand.... that's vicious.

Hope you manage to find somewhere OP.

I'd sell it and donate the proceeds to an animal shelter.

Lots of ideas on the internet about what to do with old fur coats.

Vintage shops might take it, or try eBay?

Dumping it achieves nothing at all. You didn't buy it, or fund the fur trade or cause those animals to die. If your mum left you a fabulous leather bag made out of a dead cow, you wouldn't think twice before enjoying it in her memory.

I'd wear it and enjoy it until it fell apart. So deliciously light and warm.

I'd probably repurpose it into a lovely throw. Silk velvet on the other side.

I'd put it in the textile recycling facility at the local recycling centre or, as I did with an old fur coat, remove any non-compostable lining, buttons, etc then cut it into strips and wound it in with tree and bush cuttings from my garden - as a natural material, it broke down easily, creating a habitat for beetles and other insects, plus birds came and took pieces for their nests (which was especially lovely to watch).

You could also try shredding it or cutting it into small pieces (minus the lining as above) and scatter it around the garden for birds to find and use as nesting material.

Thanks for asking this OP. I've always wondered what to do with vintage fur. The animals have already been brutally killed and it just seems wrong to then bin it. You didn't buy it new so what is the most ethical way to proceed?

Sorry for the loss of your mum.

Put it on ebay

We gave away my grandmother's to a theatre company to use as a costume (1950s mink).

Or sell on Ebay and donate the proceeds to a good cause (IMO ruling out PETA) like a local animal shelter.

Don’t wash it you’ll ruin it. Sell it on eBay or gumtree someone will buy it for sure.

I would love to inherit a vintage fur coat, I'd never wear it and think the whole industry is vile but yet part of me thinks it's such a waste to just throw it away. I'd keep it in my wardrobe and just snuggle it now and then.Grin

I sold a fur coat on eBay. It was a very expensive coat when it was bought in the late 70s. Think it went for £35.

I inherited one from a great aunt and felt exactly the same way - so I put it in one of the charity clothes bins in a supermarket carpark....

@fallfallfall

If you have the money have it reworked. Fur on the inside, gortex on the outside. Lightweight and incredibly warm.

I like this idea. Or just wear it as is and if anyone asks tell them it's faux.

Avoid making a decision and leave it hanging in the wardrobe for the next generation to make a decision on hopefully a long time in the future? That's what I'm doing 😀

I wouldn't throw it away, that's dreadful but would never wear it or want someone else to do so, so off to an animal charity or dog basket it would go.

+1 to eBay. I bought a cracking vintage fur coat off eBay while at university. I wore it to walk through the icy city streets to hot stuffy parties. Sold it on when I didn't go to parties in skimpy dresses in the middle of winter any more! Someone will buy it and wear it and appreciate it, which is the best outcome in my opinion.

I have a mink coat that my husband bought me for my 50th. birthday. It's a casual style that I can wear when dressed up or over jeans and a sweater. The only problem with it is that where a live it seldom gets cold enough now to wear it, but when I can, I do.(Our winters can vary between minus 20 and plus 10 degrees)!
It is the same question about ivory jewellery - I have some very old pieces from dead relatives and some bought ca. 30 years ago when the trade was still acceptable and legal - should I just throw it all away now just because it is no longer seen as politally acceptable?

I work in luxury fashion and see this all the time.

If you are seriously anti-fur then don't put the coat back into public circulation. People will only stop buying fur realistically when they aren't able to.

Seen as though it's a family heirloom I'd store it. My grandmother gave me a mink coat and I have it stored away. It might not feel ethical to you, but it's an item with meaning so you might feel worse to get rid of it.
