To expect my children not to be given cereal and jam on toast for tea at (£15) after school club?

My children have come home this week saying the above was all that was on offer at the after school club they attend.

AIBU for suggesting to them that this is not an appropriate tea for children. 'A light tea' is apparently offered during the session.

Does anyone know of any government guidance for healthy eating in childcare settings? I can only find early years guidance in my searches.

For full information, the after school club is local to, but not run by, the school the children attend. It is the only local option available which works with their school.

I agree, Jolly, and I don't get the 'light'; tea is tea.

I think it a communication issue and it depends where you are in the country - around here 'tea' is toast and jam followed by cake! A light supper would be beans or egg on toast. A light tea would not mean a meal to me.

Yes, I agree, they could drop the 'light'.

When I was at school I boarded for two years. The bell would ring around 3.30pm, we'd all go to the toilet, wash hands etc and on to the refectory where we would sit at tables of five or six people and be given a big pot of tea, jug of milk, sugar basin, a plate of bread, margerine in a butter dish (we had butter on Sundays), jam and a jar or fish or meat paste. There was sometimes slices of cake, swiss roll and the like.

It was nice, just enough not to spoil our evening meal.

Afterwards we'd go off and do our own thing, go to our house room or whatever. The bell would ring again around 6.30 where we would (again), go to toilet and wash hands, then pile into the dining room for supper - which was lovely! Best meal of the day and always far nicer than lunch in which lumpy mash, swede and cabbage was often involved.

All those moaning about toast at after-school club, are you expecting the children to have 4 meals a day?!! I find it odd that you'd want them to be having curry or something as an after-school high tea?

Won't you be giving them a proper dinner at home when they get home too? Its a lot to expect after school club to serve dinner to all their attendee's.
