AIBU to ask the cleaners not to open the curtains?

We are staying in a hotel just now and when the cleaners come in they open the curtains in both bedrooms.

I have a one year old and I get him to sleep in my bed then move him into his cot in his room. The curtains are floor to ceiling and they leave a strip of light down the side. I've been climbing into a chair to position them as best I can to reduce the light then then the cleaners comes and opens them when we aren't here.

AIBU to leave a note to ask that the curtains stay shut so I don't need to faff about with them at bedtime?

Friends of mine used to bring a temporary blackout blind to our house, it sticks onto the window with suckers. You could maybe get one delivered to the hotel?

Hope all goes well for you and little one.

We brought some of those with us but the windows are so large that they aren't functional.

Honestly please just speak to housekeeping. They will put a note against your room asking that the curtains are left shut.

That's more likely to be effective than leaving a note (as I said before, a lot of the cleaners may not be able to understand English).

I think the medical issue is pertinent - normally you wouldn't be there for so long for a start.

Wishing you well.

Ah rubbish about the blackout blinds! I actually would speak to reception as I think they'd be understanding in the circumstances. I wouldn't bat an eye if I worked there.

Decent Hotels are used to catering to personalised requests no matter how unusual they may seem to some.

Hi OP, have you seen the trick of using trouser hangers from the wardrobe (peg ones) to peg curtains closed? Wishing you the best and getting back home soon. X

Or could you ask to move rooms to the other side of the building so sun won't be shining directly. If that's possible

I want to know if housekeeping will find it annoying if I left a note to ask for the curtains to be left. It really is as simple as that.

I doubt they'd find your note annoying but I also doubt they'll remember to leave the curtains closed. It's best practice to clean with as much light as possible.

Also, housekeeping staff might not have great English reading skills

As a paying customer, you can ask for whatever you want! (within reasonable boundaries obviously).

Of course you can ask them to leave the curtain shut. Ask the front desk and leave a note in the room.

I am puzzled by some of the answers, of all the requests hotels receive, keeping the curtains shut is really not a big deal.

I keep thinking of that expose that Channel 4 did on Premier Inn. The cleaning was outsourced (of course) and the working conditions for cleaners were highly unreasonable.
