To want to know why I spent the night in hospital.

I have a chronic condition Bronchiectasis - this basically means my lungs are a bit damaged and I am prone to chest infections. I have been taking antibiotics for a few days to clear a suspected infection. But I was feeling pretty rough yesterday and called GP for some advice. I was called in for an in person appointment, first in over a year. I had bp taken etc. GP listened to lungs they seemed clear, so I was told to go to A&E for blood tests and chest x-ray to rule out other causes. I have been feeling exhausted and have some pains in ribs/ chest.

So spend 5 hours in A&E having tests etc. Told my a clichéd dismissive consultant that I could go home but an hour and a half later still in waiting room and then admitted but non of the night shift nurses could tell me what had changed. DH fuming, on phone, me tired and just wanted somewhere to lie down by then.

Have had a crappy night's sleep but my BP etc. is good now so that is something. Now I just really want to go home. But also really want to know where all the miscommunication happened!?!

Did anyone come to speak to you after the doctor said you could go home?
If you are on a ward now, either speak to the doctors on the ward round or the nurse in charge and ask them what you have been admitted for, and what needs to happen before you can go home.

Rewis · 27/04/2021 06:39

It's time to be that patient and demand answers. If the person that sees you doesn't know/cant tell you, then demand them to find someone who can.

beginningoftheend · 27/04/2021 06:41

Yanbu to want an explanation. You need to calmly but firmly ask for one, and not take no for an answer.

6Helen7 · 27/04/2021 06:44

When they admitted you did you say that consultant had told you that you could go home? What did they say?

picklemewalnuts · 27/04/2021 06:45

Why did you stay if you were told to go home? Were you waiting for something to happen? That may be why they admitted you.

farfallarocks · 27/04/2021 06:46

Sounds like maybe they were assessing you for Heart problems? Can you ask?

Rewis · 27/04/2021 06:46

I know it's not the same but my grandmother had surgery a few years ago. It was a scheduled knee replacement so she knew what she was getting but after the surgery nobody told her anything. So when I visited I translated the documents from medical speak to human speak for her since nobody else had told her what the surgery actually entailed.

Medical professional really need to be better at communicating!

DIshedUp · 27/04/2021 06:47

If the consultant told you you could go home why were you still in the waiting room an hour and a half later?

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/04/2021 06:49

a junior doctor probably anxious that they are missing something.
did you have your X ray?

MichelleScarn · 27/04/2021 06:50

I don't understand, you saw the consultant who said you could go home, then 1.5 hrs later you were still in the waiting room?
How did you get there and how were you planning to get home, was it a safety thing (v unlikely with the state of beds these days!) That they didn't want to discharge you in the early hours of the morning.

SuddenArborealStop · 27/04/2021 06:51

When I brought my DS in with croup and he needed observation they said if they hadn't cleared him by midnight we had to go to the ward , could it be something like that

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/04/2021 06:52

why is your dh fuming though?

WouldBeGood · 27/04/2021 06:54

I don’t understand why you stayed in if told you could go home?

I can see you might have been waiting for official discharge or meds, but I’d just have gone home if they weren’t forthcoming. No chance I’d stay in without a darn good explanation.

I hope you’re feeling better. If you are and still no explanations I’d just get up and tell them you’re leaving.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 27/04/2021 06:56

It would have been because of the pains in your chest.

Never mind your OH being annoyed, stay until they answer your questions, as anything could have shown up that they needed another opinion on before discharging you.

QuarantineQueen · 27/04/2021 06:57

I assume she means the consultant told her she would be able to go home after xyz, not that they discharged her and she hung around!

FlemCandango · 27/04/2021 07:06

Cheers for suggestions / explanations

Yes I think heart issues was the concern. My BP was high but I tend to get anxious while spending hours in A&E it is back to normal now.

I was told by nice jr doc that I had to wait in waiting room for last test results and as I had a canula in my hand so was expecting someone to take that out.

I waited patiently then impatiently, then asked reception after shift change and was told I was being admitted after all but all the Docs were "on phone" or something. I said to the nurse I had expected to go home, they seemed surprised, said my notes were for admission, I had a bed and that was that. I needed observations I still don't really know what else. It seems to contradict the casual dismissal from the consultant.

So i was taken off on a wheelchair to a ward. It was nearly midnight I was exhausted. I gave up arguing.

This morning after about 4 hours sleep I am just counting down till ward rounds. I will ask more then.

I just feel a bit discombobulated by it all. I still feel rough but in a getting over a virus-y way not in a I need hospital way.

I am not always such a meek person but I was swept up in a process and by the time I realised something was wrong I was too worn out to complain!

Oh bless you, how exhausting! It's awful how confusing it is, in hospital.

MagpieSong · 27/04/2021 07:08

@AbsolutelyPatsy

why is your dh fuming though?
Because it’s very poor communication and shouldn’t happen.
WouldBeGood · 27/04/2021 07:11

Hope you get the all clear and home soon @FlemCandango

FlemCandango · 27/04/2021 07:13

DH was fuming in an outraged on my behalf way and I felt bad as he left the kids (young teens) to pick me up and then spent an hour waiting redundantly in a car park.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/04/2021 07:14

get some rest op

Lilacflowerperfume · 27/04/2021 07:14

God, I hope you get some sleep, hospitals are the worst places for ill people, as you can never get any rest.

They should be good, but are sadly staffed by some gems and a lot of idiots

FlemCandango · 27/04/2021 07:19

Most of the nurses and docs I met were very nice. I just feel like a memo was missed somewhere!

OP posts:
AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/04/2021 07:21

that is very common ime op.
take the opportunity to rest, be a patient patient!

kalikkma · 27/04/2021 07:22

Perhaps your latest results mean you need reviewing by someone this morning and this was why you were admitted?
